What is Your Integrity Worth??

Say you listed a kinda rare part for sale, dropped the price a few times, then someone agrees to buy that part at your last advertised price.
Someone else comes along and offers more, how much would it take for you to break your word to the 1st COMMITTED buyer and sell to someone else??

matt930s 08-11-2015 06:27 PM

Does not matter how much more $.. Deal is a deal.. I really think the for sale forum should be first public post has it. Too much hanky panky potential with "PMs"........

MattR

Ps....someone offer you $60 more for crusty?

spyerx 08-11-2015 08:52 PM

Deal is a deal for me.

seer_chris 08-11-2015 09:10 PM

Say you end up cutting the first deal off...Then the second potential buyer finds your piece too expensive... So he stops reacting to your mails... Then you've ruined to deals for what.. 40 bucks.... Speaking about integrity... Turn the mirror around And how would you feel as a potential buyer... At last Finding a rare part at a reasonable price.... Then getting the deal blown by a greedy seller?
A deal is a deal

If the buyer has paid, a deal is a deal.

If someone says I'll take it, I usually allow a couple days for payment. If they don't pay and I don't hear from them, which seems to happen more often than I would like, I move on to the next buyer.

"a deal is a deal"

And yes the key word is committed -- if a buyer has missed a payment deadline then all bets are off but barring that - a deal is a deal
I had a seller shake and look me in the eye on a fair motorbike price. The bike needed a safety and while at the mechanic he called and said he thought he could get more - I implored him for his own ability to sleep at night to not trade his word for the few hundred he might get. He backed out of our deal. Maybe he sleeps great at night but I never could if I did that.

This is why it is important for sellers to do their homework first, before they jump into the shark infested, no holds barred or quarter given, of the selling world.
Unfortunately many sellers are just Porsche enthusiasts who naively maybe list a few unneeded items for sell to fund their project and are clueless, and then they try to backpedal when they realize they left a lot of money on the table for the buyer/flipper.
But I believe a deal is a deal. Your word should be your bond.
If a seller lose out on money they should rack that up to the cost of an education and move on.

As someone who has been selling on this forum, including some very rare vintage parts, for a very long time, and more than once, I have had people send me PMs trying to get me to break a deal, and have had some offered a LOT more $$$ and, I have always done the right thing. And I'm talking, in some cased, over a Grand (7R rim).
As already stated, in the morning, when you look in the mirror, that you like & respect who is looking back at you.

Sadly, some here don't have the integrity, flat out lie, then accuse other person of not doing what he committed too (that is why you save the PMs to prove they are lying).

Cajundaddy 08-12-2015 07:05 AM

A deal is a deal with prompt buyer deposit or payment. A buyer who says "I'll take it!" And then gets weak knees about payment is not a buyer. No $$$ = no deal.

Matt Monson 08-12-2015 07:16 AM

I voted last night. A deal is a deal.

I give people 24 hours to pay. And then they have lost priority. I also post to my threads that "dibs" comments in my threads mean nothing. Send me a message and start a conversation. Pms have time signatures and I handle them in the order received. If you offer less than ask you get lower priority then a full price guy who contacted me later unless I actually said yes to your lower price.

I sold some wheels last month. A guy offered my $200 less than my ask on some Fuchs. I told him since the ad was 30 minutes old I wanted to wait a day. I gave him 24 hour first right of refusal. If I got a higher offer he could match or pass. I got no offers. He got the wheels. A day later (even though thread was marked sold) I got a better offer. Too late.

Honor and integrity are earned. I always say that the last part of learn, is earn...earn it by being honest at all times. I have my doubts about people who sell stuff for a living...

matt930s 08-12-2015 07:34 AM

But, you have integrity with PM's Matt M.

Thats not the case with everyone. Thats why I think the open forum is a better timestamp.

Speaking of (lack of) integrity:
I recently bought some wheels from a good a guy responding to my WTB. I also had a guy that tried to flip some FIKSE's I wanted to buy with 930 offset that were offered in the Pelican FS section about a month ago. The original seller didnt want to ship so they ended up with a local guy that tried to flip them to me for double. I was actually going to use the wheels this guy was flipping (had I had a chance to buy originally). His name will remain anonymous since he wasnt a total dick.

Anyway, I ended up with some nice "new" wheels and tires from a standup Pelican...

I guess that works if you conduct the negotiating publicly in the thread too.

My issue is there are serial dibbers. They do driveby dibs. Then it is on you to PM them and try to engage them. They might totally ignore your PM even though they publicly claimed dibs. Meanwhile I've got someone else who came along 5 minutes later who sent me a PM and offers to take full price and pay pal me right now. F that. Dib guy has zero priority in those situations. You want to buy what I am selling start a conversation. Shouting "dibs" for all to see doesn't qualify.

And I see these jokers who are looking for something, maybe some 7x15 Fuchs or some Weber 40IDAs. They go through the classifieds and territorial piss their dibs on several threads. Now they are locking up 3 different buyers when the reality is they will only close with 1 of them. Get lost.

I too have dealt with that too, some things multiple times, but I generally give people the benefit of doing the right thing, and most of the time it works out, as things do happen to people.
When you have been collecting "I might need this one day" for close to 30 years, and you inherit TWO other "I might need this one day" collections, one day you realize that you have a LOT of stuff, and when you have a few unfinished projects, you start selling or trading for what you will use on your cars.

My integrity is for sale for something like selling car parts, but it wont come cheap.

Id probably back out on a non binding handshake for 250k or anything that would buy me 5 or so years of freetime in retirement. For 500$, not a chance.

Matt Monson 08-12-2015 10:01 AM

Dibs on that engine cradle in the second picture...

If you say "I'll take it" and the seller doesn't respond, perhaps it is already sold or he doesn't really want to sell it. I don't think a deal is sealed until $$ is exchanged and when selling I will usually hold an item and allow 2-3 days for that to happen. I ask the buyer to give me their Paypal address and I send an invoice normally within 24 hrs.

When buying I want to pay right away so we have a contract. If a seller doesn't give me payment info I will remind them once or twice and then move on. Sometimes shipping gets slow from people who don't sell often and I am patient as long as I know it is coming in a week or two. I never get in a mad rush for overnight express.

There is a TV show for this.... its called hoarders!

mooty 08-12-2015 06:33 PM

as a seller, once i agree to a price, i will give you a time frame (very short one) to pay in full. i dont do deposits. if you missed that deadline by a minute, sorry. we dont have a deal. some ppl tell me he's traveling... sorry. we have internet. i carry lap top, iphone, ipad, spare battery everywhere i go. to say one is traveling and cannot pay up wont fly. but if you stick to the terms, i will not take another higher offer ragardless of how much.

as a buyer, i dont feel i have a deal unless we have a binding email or you have received my pmt.

but in OP's case. i am lost. the seller does'nt provide pmt info..... very strange.
