The bargains are still out there ...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/880690-1976-911-carrera-3-0-a.html

I should have Pelican open on the desktop at all times and not go to any meetings where I cant look at Pelican F/S at all times ...
Someone got something very nice, at a very fair price. I wouldn't paint it, Id just check the motor and add a little jewelry to the suspension and then simply drive the snot out of it

this car was more bargain last month in a local San Diego used car lot. in south San Diego,
well, the buyer got lucky and could sell it again fast, all in his power.
still good deal in my opinion.

Good deal, but really, what's the difference between this and my EURO 78SC except for rarity? I guarantee mine's in better condition, and could beat it on the track as well.

sm70911 08-27-2015 02:35 PM

I don't know what you have in your 78 Nick so I can't speculate, besides most of what happens on the track is about the driver :)
But generally I think the C3's have, higher compression and different gearing, plus if I'm not mistaken its a 930 case. The experts will chime in hopefully.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bragging about my track capabilites. Not that capable, really.
But my car is. My 3.0 had been reworked, but slightly, and being Euro to begin with, I'm convinced it's a better engine than the 76 and 77 3.0's.
That's all I'm saying.

Don't get me wrong I'm the Euro cars biggest fan. I think it's an entirely different experience :)

NYNick 08-27-2015 05:27 PM

My whole point is, there's no discernable difference, other than a few pounds, if any. So why pay so much more?
"Investment grade"? Hah!

Low production 911s always where the money is no?
I am sure if all 911 1976 has carrera body. It won't be pricey like this.

How was it reworked? A '78 SC engine is basically the same engine as the '76 3.0 except the 76 has better cams. In stock form the 76 has 23 lb/ft more at 4200 with 20hp more at 500rpm higher in the range. It's got much more area under the curve.

What would make a stock 78 engine better? What makes yours even better than stock?

NYNick 08-28-2015 02:49 AM

I guess I walked into this, but my point is that I'm not convinced the dollar delta between the 76/77 3.0's versus early SC's are necessarily worth it. That's all. They're pricey!

FYI, my engine has bigger Mahles, higher compression and Euro fuel delivery. I'd put it up against the stock 76 3.0 any day, but they're so hard to find, that'll never happen!:)

PeterC911 08-28-2015 04:30 AM

Why the large US Spec bumperettes? I thought all Euro spec cars, especially one like this, would have the smaller ROW bumperettes?

Arbee 08-28-2015 04:30 AM

I saw the car and it was rough. It was wearing Baja Mexico plates and had a lot more issues than just a minor front end accident. It was a beater.

So like the factory 3.1 or a Max Moritz 3.2 kit? I bet that is fun.

I agree that the car isn't worth the premium, just like US Carreras aren't. When I was shopping I was offered a 74 Carrera rolling chassis that was missing a lot more than just the engine and gearbox. $14k. That's about what I paid for my running driving 74 911s slantnose!!!

But these 3.0 Carreras are out there. I was offered a different 76 in better nick just last week for the same sort of money, $46k. I don't consider that a deal.

CountD 08-28-2015 06:05 AM

A lot is in the name. Like '74-'75 US market Carreras, which are basically USA '74-'75 normal cars with the normal engine. The USA '74-'75 cars are Carreras, and both have Carrera in the name and are designated as such.

The SC is a Super Carrera, but not many people know this and call it a SC and don't know that the SC is a Carrera because it's abbreviated.

That makes the '76 Carrera 3.0 that much more special because of the script.

I guess it could be considered a first year SC. We never got them over here. No doubt that being an earlier car it is probably more simple. But it will always be more desirable than a plain-Jane SC, that's the game because of the lower numbers, name, and lack of a US model, so you need to throw out the 'this is better because or I don't get it' logic because it doesn't apply here.

Matt Monson 08-28-2015 06:23 AM

Pretty healthy debate about the Super Carrera naming in this thread:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/851655-911-super-carrera-next-big-thing.html
I fall on the side that the factory did NOT name it that. The media did.

I fully understand why the market values them more but that doesn't make them more valuable to me. And it is only a recent thing. For years guys were afraid of the 3.0 Carrera specifically because it was not a US model and was grey market. There's an arse for every seat and for $45k I'll find somewhere else to sit...

NYNick 08-28-2015 08:55 AM

Honestly Matt, I don't know what displacement it ends up being. I know it has 10:1 compression, and pulls nice and strong. I asked the Master Porsche tech who built it how many horses it had, 240? 250?, and he responded, "at least". Compared to my son's 3.2 G50 however. ..well let's just say he'd win that race.
And being a badge whore myself, my car wears the Carerra 3.0 script as well.
Who says you can't have it both ways?
