Sure, red over tan, but a 930 with 80k on the clock and a fresh top end?

Ronnie's.930 10-13-2015 05:02 PM

Amazing how 7-8 years ago, that car would have been priced at about $35K, even by dealers. Are they really selling for that much now (not people just asking that much)?

If the seller would spend a few $$$$$ on a professional detail and put the factory steering wheel back on the car would sell for as much as 90k.

timchar 10-13-2015 05:35 PM

I've seen a few sitting for some time at 80-125 k range. That's getting into the upper stratosphere where most enthusiasts are excluded. Tim

We can find out by watching this one. If it sits, then no.

Agreed about the most enthusiasts excluded. I could not dream of buying my current car if at that price (I bought about 8 years ago for $35K), and most "normal" :D people that post in the Turbo forum, would be excluded by current pricing as well.

Too bad that the factory steering wheel is an outrageous design abomination - looks like it belongs in my Ford box truck as apposed to the interior of a vintage Porsche. :D

I took that bastage off and sold it almost immediately after purchase - couldn't believe that someone actually wanted it. That and the rear wiper assembly I couldn't get rid of fast enough.

Having recently sold my '79 930, I have some 1st hand experience with the market. I don't see this car as a "heck of a deal" at 84k.

The 930 market is definitely softening up.. Even on the early '76 & '77 models simply because there are now all over.. The only ones that hold strong are the '89s (5-speed magic I guess) Not many concourse like, low mile coupes around for sale. Not even at the auctions.

Interesting how many 930 turbos and 993 turbos for sale....the recent air-cooled rapid appreciation has brought them out of the closets.....too many at once contributing to softening?

It happens in other collectible markets I follow.

The next step is potential buyers seeing the surplus and deciding to wait for sellers to drop prices to move inventory. Some of these dealers seem pretty stubborn and in no rush to meet the market, though, and I do still hear about people buying into the hype this late in the game.

I hear that Bob K. experiences a similar phenomenon, BUTT it occures when he takes too few of his trusty blue bombers (no such thing as "too many" in his world, BUTTofcourse)!!!

I think people need to look closer at the market. There isn't a monolithic "930 market."

There is a market for 3.0 930s - with some extra value for the earliest examples. There is a 3.3 market - split 3 ways: 78 and 79 930s are strong; 80-88 are a fraction of the price, then there's the 89 930... With G50. BIG premium. I've simplified it a bit, as there are variations, including cabs and slantnoses and slantnose cabs...

My point is that you can't generalize. Oh, and one other thing, Turbo buyers seem not to discount red cars as much as n/a Porsche buyers do at the moment.

You would love the factory look from Porsche if you ever climed behind the wheel of an early 80's Rolls Royce, you would think you were driving a 1940's bus.

930s seem great, but what holds me back is that awful 4speed transmission. How is it? Just super long gears? Still fun to drive?

Skwerl 10-14-2015 06:58 AM

Lack of ABS is also kind of a downer for me.

You get used to the tall gears, but it will never be great for around town driving in stock form. Some people drop in shorter gears or covert to a 5 speed, or you just live with it. The cars are still a lot of fun to drive or course, but that transmission doesn't really help make it more fun.
