Carrera tail value
Hey all....I changed my decklid to the standard tail as I prefer the clean lines of the 911 without the Carrera tail.
I was going to keep it in case I ever sold the car since as I thought maybe the new owner might want it. Well....I'm not selling the car and this thing is taking up space! Any thoughts on what it might be worth? Details are: Guards Red tail of 1989 Carrera 3.2 Excellent condition with no dents or scratches Rubber lip in great condition Has A/C condenser and latch still attached Has wiper motor still on it that works - never got the arm when I bought the car so that's missing Photo of it on my car before I swapped it out. It's located in Southern California (Irvine to be exact) and I don't really want to ship it anywhere as it's bulky and weighs a ton. Thanks in advance for the opinions. ![]()

I had that exact tail in that exact shape and color on my cabriolet and only got 400.00 for it. It seems that many, like me and you, like them better without, so it's a hard sell and a pain to ship. I wish I kept it honestly.

I don't think you should sell it. The reason is that someday you will sell your car and the more expensive these cars cost, the more people want them original. So you will be selling a car that is missing parts!! Now you can say "hey, it's my car" you are right. But I am telling you just find a place for it because in the future, buyers will know that most 3.2 cars came with a Carrera tail!

Thanks guys for the input.
Nick - this is the exact reason I have even held on to the tail is thinking that if I did sell it someday, would someone want the original tail. Personally, I wouldn't care but understand the logic as these cars rise in value so much.....tough decision. And if value is only about $400, I will most certainly keep it! Arbee - will reply to your PM shortly.

Yup. Think about it, a collector comes to look at your car in 10 years and says " Wheres the tail? " Then he offers $5000 less because of missing equipment! A lot of people remove the tail...but a lot of folks just like me, love the Carrera tail.

I paid good money for a used two piece tail with good rubber, and more good money for a spare decklid, then more money for all the other "missing" parts to mate the two and then MORE good money to have them painted Guards Red to install on my Targa.
I personally wouldn't let it go for less the $600 or so.

You guys need to stop thinking so far down the line or about supposed collectors. Nobody's "collecting" cars with 100k plus miles. These will be drivers and people will modify them to suit their tastes.

I have a very nice original 1987 Carrera tail that is Cassis Red. I plan on making a coffee table out of it or using it as wall art. I only paid $400 for it which is about all they're worth. Shipping is a nightmare on a heavy oversized tail like this to the point that shipping it isn't much of an option.

87-89 cars came with matched labeled body panels. Also, 87-89 deck lids came with a laminated fiberglass reinforcement along the inside bottom edge to help knuckle draggers from denting the lid by pushing along the bottom edge when closing the lid. Regardless of mileage, a car with all original matching body parts is typically more desirable. If the car is customized to suit one persons taste, it is always nice to be able to put it back to original if desired. For these reasons, I would keep the tail.

If it's OEM it's worth way more than $400...maybe double. It's the shipping that'll kill the deal.

Thanks again for the input.
I tend to agree with amg463, my car has 125K on it, interior has been changed to RS style, although I have all the original parts that came off it, so I don't think it's in the same league for a collector as a low mile, rare color '89. The decklid is 100% OEM and has the matching VIN tag on it, so there's no way I would let it go for $400. I was honestly thinking about $800 but wanted some opinions. I don't think I would consider less than that. Many thanks to everyone for the opinions.....just need to figure out if I want to let it sit and collect dust now or not!

Hmmmm.....my tail is original and gorgeous. I'll sell it for $800 any day of the week. Although I picked mine up in person up in Seattle because the guy couldn't sell it and shipping is nuts on those things. I really don't think they're worth more than $400 to $600 for the simple fact that very few people want them and they were a common piece in the mid to late 80's.

My God, keep it. Take it off the car if you want, but keep it. I guarantee if you get rid of it you'll someday wish you hadn't.
Cheers d.

With the tail on, it helps old 911's lose that squished VW look. .....Just kidding!

Ha - funny, but true, and one of the reasons I think 911s look much better with tails than without.
