Selling my '77 911 Targa - Whats Reasonable?
Hey guys,
I would appreciate any information to guide me on the appropriate value to sell my car. Not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but I sincerely appreciate any input or guidance. I think 25k is a bit high but have been searching for a recent sales to gage. Here is the add as listed: I acquired this Porsche a few months ago from a local private sale. The car had been sitting for about 5 years in a garage under a cover. The car has never been stored outside, and there is absolutely no rust. The car has been repainted the original color and has 72,XXX miles. The paint is in fair condition, with a few imperfections (car is not washed in any of the pictures). I believe I am the third owner. When I purchased the car I went through and did the basic maintenance, and the car fired right up after a new battery. In addition I have: -Sent the distributor to Barry Hershon at IAE in Detroit. See receipt below. -Two refurbished front calipers from Pelican because the front right was sticking. -Misc maintenance. The car is not perfect, but I do drive it a 15 minute commute to work with no problems. I began the process of replacing gaskets on the motor to stop some oil leaks from the car sitting for so long. There is still some work that needs to be done on the car I'm sure, I haven't driven it far enough to burn off the residual oil on the exhaust. The car will need some TLC and a proper cleaning of the interior, exhaust gaskets, and I'm sure a few odds and ends I haven't found yet. I originally wanted a track car, but cannot bring myself to cannibalize a perfectly good 911. I'm looking for a coupe, but am asking $25,000 or best offer. I am very flexible on the price and have an enclosed trailer if delivery is needed. I'm sure I am forgetting something and will edit accordingly. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

How do you rate the paint on a scale of 1 to 10? Any bubbles?
What does the battery tray look like? How about the interior? What's that white thing on the dash in the picture? How does the tranny shift? What does the undercarriage look like? Any maintenance history for the engine? Any pictures of the engine bay? Is the exhaust original? Any aftermarket parts? Is it numbers matching still? Clean title? A lot of unknowns. As described, sounds like a low 20s car to me. If you're not absolutely desperate to sell in a hurry, you might want to consider having some work done at a good shop, and holding on to it until the spring. I think that might make economic sense. Where in CT is the car? Not quite what I'm looking for but I might come take a look. |

Clear title and clean title don't mean the same thing. Are there any title issues at all? Liens? Salvage?

Wait, no one has even mentioned the reliability of the 2.7? Has it gotten to the point that 911's are so valuable that we don't even talk about that engine anymore?
$25K for a 77 Targa with no rebuild history? Um, not these days. I'm not going near that car without the Tech of my choice going over, under around and through that engine, top to bottom, guaranteeing me it's been rebuilt. If not, high teens for me thank you very much. It's a 2.7 Targa, like pmax alluded to.

I don't think a $25k ask it out of line. You might get it, you might need to deal a bit. Just depends on how quickly you want out of it and want to get on to building your coupe.
77s are tough. They got all the smog crap that really nailed the reputation of the 2.7 engine as crap, even though it isn't. Where I live, I still have to smog a 77. Many places don't. Those places are your market.

I appreciate the input guys! Yes, the 25k is ambitious, but would like to price the car to sell and be marketable. From what I'm seeing the high teens is where a car like this would sell for?

Don't sell yourself short. Posters here tend to attach a flipper tax on a car like yours. It biases their input. That car is worth more than $20k all day long.

Agreed. I see it low twenties as described. Clearly the time of the year doesn't help.

Those numbers are easy to throw out when you are not writing the check.
I'll be shocked if it sells in the low twenties. |

Engine bay pics would be good. Because it is a later smogged 2.7 and assuming it has over 60k mi, the engine should have been rebuilt. Most of these engines didn't last 70k mi. Needs to have the 11 blade fan added, thermal reactors removed, head stud replacement and updated chain tensioners.
Assuming that, the OP's $25k obo is a fair asking price. Be willing to negotiate lower.

3 months ago when I was writing the check, you would have been hard pressed to find any decent middie targa for less than mid-20s. I ended up with a 74 coupe with a 3.2 swap because it was less expensive than my targa options at the time.

None of us are experts. I can't write checks for every car that I guess a value for. All we can do is use our own personal experiences to help others.
I bought a 77 911S less than a year ago. Asking price was $27.5k, I bought for $25k. I figure that I paid right at market value....not a smoking deal but not ripped off either. Here's mine when it was picked up by a blog prior to my purchase: 1977 Porsche 911S | German Cars For Sale Blog

It did not take a large investment to get that price. In fact the investment both in time and dollars was quite modest.

Well, do tell. Add up all the receipts from the rebuild.
