993's over 100k Miles
Been looking at 993's in a target mileage range of 60k - 75K. But I've found one I think I like at 118K. Assuming that all these cars either have or will have clutch replacement, what major risk factors are there in the engine area in jumping up another 50K miles or so? (going down in price approx $ 8-10K.) PPI is assumed, but it's going to be a big hassle to do it remotely so I'd like be get better educated going in.
I'm not too worried about resale and only plan on 3K miles max/year in this climate - Maybe I can keep it long enough for most 993's to be over 100K. Thanks in advance. Ron

993's motors are extremely reliable and many consider to be best of all 911 aircooled- I have seen many with high mileage that run very well

I owned a 993 for 4 years. One of the biggest costs can be the slippery slope of upgrades. If I was going to look for another one I would be looking for an upgraded suspension and wheels. The other nice to haves are stereo, light weight flywheel, shifter and exhaust upgrades. A change in the gearbox ratios would be ideal but a rare find. A leakdown test on the PPI is mandatory as some cars experienced valve guide wear.

Thanks to all for the helpful input (except Rich's)
![]() The 100K+ car I was interested in was sold so I'm still in the hunt. This forum has been a great resource. Ron

My 100k mile 97 C4S has been rock solid. Just a few wear and maintenance items. Cracked interior pieces, gauges failing, brakes, and leaking struts. It has been a great driver. 100k is a good place to shop if you are looking to drive it and not worry about values and mileage.

Also, in the earlier ad, while the seller seems to do a good job of telling it like it is, I keep wondering what kind of rain storm could flood a floor pan up to 3 inches or more just because a window was left open. And because of this they park it? Also curious that the immobilizer was dead - guess he left the trunk open as well? And Connecticut? Where did Hurricane Sandy hit? All conjecture, but life is too short to buy a 993 with such curious history.

Interesting thread, I found a two-owner, '97 Coupe with 167k miles, full history, in beautiful condition. It's posted for $37k but he says he has a little room on the price. I have seen cars in the low 100k miles going for about that same price but not in this same condition, it looks brand new.
My local guru says it's way overpriced but is it? They seem to be fetching that kind of $ these days... Do you guys think $35k for a 167k mile 993 is too much? I plan on keeping and driving less than 4k a year. |

I've found many "local gurus" are stuck in the past on pricing and don't understand where these cars have gone.

I agree with you Matt, I guess I am wondering if anybody here would be hesitant to buy a 993 with that many miles? Having a beautiful 993 for $35k seems pretty awesome to me, even if it does have high miles...

The mileage wouldn't scare me either. I think the price reasonable.
Get a PPI and make sure it has been well tended and go for it.

I agree with everyone who says that in most cases, miles are less important than condition and maintenance history. You could even argue that having a decent chunk of miles means it's not a lemon, whereas a 15k-mile queen, who knows, it could be a Friday Afternoon Special destined to grenade the transmission at 30k.

I don't think many 15k no garage queens self destruct. But what they do need is a lot of rubber. So many rubber parts on these cars have a shelf life and ones that are driven get them refurbished. Ones with low miles that are all original will decay pretty quickly when you start to drive them.

It's not that garage queens will self-destruct from lack of use, it's that you don't know what kind of reliability you'll get from the car.

Grenade is a self destruct sort of term. Will the gearbox spring a mainshaft leak and piss oil all over the clutch? Quite likely. Only a stupid non-attentive owner would let so much oil piss out that it then grenades.

You must be talking about this car:
I've also been intrigued by it. For other makes I've owned and restored I've valued body, paint and interior + history over everything else since mechanicals were easier to fix or replace. But now that Porsche engines and trans rebuilds are way more expensive than total repaints, I have second thoughts. That said, Id be tempted on this one but am not a fan of dark colors on 993's. FWIW.
