Bring A Trailer auctions

Ok now BAT is running their own auction. One thing you clearly notice is on their auctions they do not post ONE bad word about their cars. They even interact with the posters.

So after ruining everybody else's auctions and sales with accusations and just made up nonsense they decide to protect their own.

It was a great site for exposure but the constant bashing was horrible. I had a car on there and it was a nightmare.

Anybody going to use their new auction format?

I was a bit surprised to see that they add a 5% buyer's premium to the winning bid.

The cars on auction already belong to BAT so all the profit from the auction belongs to BAT. Then they juice it by 5% more with a buyer's premium. That's a bit much I think.

Cheers

Agreed, it seems incredibly expensive all round, maybe ok for elite cars

It is amazing that cars with well taken pics and that are talked up bring all the money. That is top money for that M3 and I understand e30's are hot. How do you charge a percentage when you are running the auction and selling the car?

Maybe now they will stop beating up all the other ads.

What ever happened to their EBAY Corvette? Kinda disappeared when everyone started questioning them about their original intention about the car.

Hey, that is a good selling record so far. Let's see how they do with other cars.

Which one was yours? What made it a nightmare?

I love and hate BaT. Some of the stuff they expose is very cool but I loath how in every post they have to take at least one dig on the car. I never fails. Usually it is some mundane detail they mention they would change or some period correct modification they don't agree with. It doesn't add anything to the listing but they do it to every car.

The comments are always nuts. No matter what car there is always someone who knows nothing about the market they are speaking about saying the car isn't worth the asking price.

I think they are using BAT-owned cars while they "work out the kinks", assuming that any problems with bids not getting in would hurt the sellers. But I don't think that's the long-term plan.

Yes, you're right. In any case I still think that adding a buyer's premium to buy a car that BAT itself owns is tacky at best and greedy at worst. The M3 at the "top of the market" really went for $60.9K, not $58K...

For non-owned cars, OK. Since they only charge the seller $250 to list a car at auction, I guess BAT has to make money somehow. Normally doesn't the seller pay a higher fee than the bidder though?

Cheers

Now that there's a 911 for sale in their auction, I am interested to see if any 911s show up on the daily ads before their auction ends in August 6.

I love the comment on the 911 section when someone asks why there are so few comments being made. Yeah, that is because unlike every other sale they aren't allowing any bad comments. I mean go back and read some of the accusations and outright bad comments made when someone doesn't even ask for their car to be on the site.

I had a R5 Turbo 2 listed and it was so bad with the emails from people who had zero interest in buying the car but instead just wanted to go back and post something negative.

The end for me was when some guy shows up at my house pretending to be this big car guy and started taking pics of small details. He then all of a sudden had to leave. Of course the details were later discussed. 25-30 posts that I must be hiding something because in the pics the car was missing a lug nut on a rear wheel. A lug nut!

I asked for the car to be removed but they never did. I wish I could screw them over like they did me. I sold the car well under for what I wanted as my auction was done. Buyers get nervous no matter where the info is coming from.

I do not believe that M3 sold for $60k as it makes zero sense as even on E30 dedicated boards they are rarely trading that high in that condition. It think ultra low mile museum cars are at $75k so I do not believe it.

I have bought 3 cars off there so I don't want to be a hypocrite but the comments were the reason I got good deals on the cars. The sellers couldn't take the nonsense and I am straightforward buyer.

Its a double edged sword -- you are getting public criticism -- a lot of it from assclowns who are just trying to appear knowledgeable by picking nits, but you are also getting massive exposure to your ad.

Same here when the Marketplace forum starts commenting on ebay or for sale forum cars.

Btw -- several of the posts on that 88 911 are picking nits -- tire rub on the fenders, paint from the roll bar on the carpet, questioning the gauges & mileage, etc.

Difference is I didn't place the ad on BAT like many others they just link to ads found by viewers. Especially EBAY which used to be their favorite money making link but that has to be going away and with their auctions I am sure you won't be seeing to many EBAY cars on there.

It is a great concept and did work great until it just got out of hand with the first person to come up with a witty insult on every ad.

There was also a poster on every ad waxing nostalgic about their experience with any car posted, regardless of how mundane or bizarre -- from the time capsule 79 Mazda GLC with 15k miles to a '49 Rumpler-Borgwald Vignale-bodied Shooting Brake. Somebody owned it (or 6 of them) and it was the best car EVER.

Agreed, especially when it comes to those who like to "wax nostalgic." Isn't the story half the reason you look at an old car anyway?

We tried selling one of our cars as an exclusive there. It didn't work out, but I can't say it was a negative experience over all. There are nit-pickers and tire-kickers everywhere, you just have to filter them out or simply ignore them.

Well, if it didn't sell for $60K it still cost the high bidder $2,900 to place that bid. Your credit card is authorized for the charge as soon as you bid.

That's supposed to eliminate shill bidding and non-paying high bidders - that's the theory anyway.

Cheers

Sweet mother of pearl.

That is nice money for a very good, but not perfect car.

Add the commission and we are at about $50k for a car with a spray painted roll bar and a good list of other questionable items??? I love the way the pics make the car look like another white besides Grand Prix. Wait till the new owner gets it home.

Come on?? $50k there is something wrong and not with the market.

So when they run out of cars what happens? EBAY is going to crush them as a lot of their listings come from there.

Hey I can' stand BAT but I always route for the underdog and love when someone can turn a simple idea into making money. I just wish they level the playing field so we can bash their cars.

You Hear me BAT?

Incredible money for that car. Btw, I was correct. No 911s came up on the regular BAT before this auction ended. Did you notice that the ones that were on prior to the 911 auction being announced were over priced as well? Hmmmm. I like how they loved those BBS wheels. You know that would have been a knock if it weren't their auction car. Too many questionable details for me to trust any BAT auctions at this point.
