Well bought 911's.
I know it's few and far between but there still some decent deals out there. This recent SC on BAT was a steal. $22k recent rebuild receipt.

Matt in the comments one Pcarphile wrote
"There are a couple things that were red flags to me. The paperwork for the motor rebuild shows winter of 2013, nearly 3 years ago. Supposed only 500 miles since then? The odometer may be working now but clearly has not always been functioning. Who knows how many miles are on the car and on the motor. Based on the photos, and especially the photos which were added later in the auction this car was probably hit in the pass side rear quarter. That’s my speculation not just because of the way the rear valance does not line up correctly. Looking at the photos added later there is really shoddy work on the pass side rear quarter. There is paint flaking and rust on the quarter above the panel line. There is overspray all over the rubber panel gasket. The transmission was gone through by the shop yet part way through the auction it’s revealed that the synchros are shot. Yes it’s a common problem but listing the trans as having been gone through and then finding out it needs synchros is a bit contradictory. What’s the story with the seats and steering wheel from a later model? We also found out later in the auction the motor still needs some sorting. Just a bunch of little things didn’t add up for me. The comments about the AC, the comments about the cat doing the paint damage. They’re probably oversights but they just kept me from really showing interest." So a car with some needs, probably priced nice with room to fix those issues and have a great driver with much of the mechanicals done. Well bought I would say. |

I watched this pretty close as my friend was bidding on it. As noted in the above post, there were a lot of questions marks on it. What scared my friend off was the paint peeling off the one rear quarter panel and bubbling up off the rear bumper. Then the questions were answered like "The worst spot is the back bumper where there is a small area of bubble from the catalytic converter (common in these cars)." Really? The rear valence was outside of the quarter panels, etc. My opinion is that this car will need paint work and potentially a lot of it given it is actually bubbling and peeling off and exposing metal in spots.
Then there's obviously the whole question of why would you build an engine like this at HUGE expense, drive the car for a few hundred miles, then want to get rid of it right away...sticking it on ebay a couple times, then BaT?

I watched this one closely too. The motor could have been a really nice build but there were too many other questions which were murky for me to bid without seeing the car. The motor build being nearly 3 years old and then a claim of only 500 miles on the build didn't add up for me. Its a TMU car, I get it, and I know these ODO gears go but the story was off enough to keep me from bidding.
The paint and panel work was shoddy but that was not the what you are really buying in this car. At the price it traded, you could sort the motor and trans, then drive it. You can go back and sort the body over time.

I'm struggling with the math here... How is the winter of 2013 3 years before the fall of 2015?

This is December 2015. The invoice said 2/13. In two months we will be into 2/16 which would be 3 years straight up. We're 2 months shy of 2/16 or "nearly" 3 years. Even without the math it just struck me as odd. The seller was pretty upfront with everything and I didn't get the feeling he was intentionally trying to hide anything. IIRC he didn't tout the car as original miles. I think there was some discussion on BaT about that. My guess is there was a little more than 500 miles since rebuild. Even if that was the case the price the car traded for looks like a bargain to me. The motor alone should be worth close to that. As a sight unseen buyer I was pointing out my thoughts and doing my due diligence.

Here's another one on BaT that finished yesterday and seemed too cheap:
