914-6 Should i start it?
Just purchased a all original 914-6 from an estate- it has been sitting for a while- no upgrades to the motor- has original 49k miles and was told ran great before putting away-it turns over by hand easily- what would you do?

Talk to the tech forum folks about doing a start-up on a car that has sat a while. Fluid changes and all sorts of stuff needs to happen before you put spark to it.

Hi,I have owned a few of these.First I would drain the tank and inspect the fuel lines.Second I would remove the carbs and have them cleaned ultrasonically and reassemble with new gaskets.Do an oil change then fire it up.Drive a few hundred miles and do a leakdown test.Good luck with your new car.Fred

Along with Fred's advice I'd suggest you consider a couple more things:
- Take a look at all of the plugs and open the distributor and inspect everything there. - Check the battery terminals and the ground at the chassis connection. Clean that up if needed. - See what the oil looks like. If the PO was crafty there may be a sump plate with a drain port. If not, you will have to split the lines between the tank and cooler. If it isn't clean do an oil change. Remember that final oil levels in a six are checked with the engine running. - Remove the upper side trans plug and check the fluid level. - If it fires you will be tempted to drive it so brake lines and brake fluid are easy checks. If Mark is busy, Paul Abbot of Performance Oriented (Performance Oriented) is a Porsche Weber guru. Paul can provide all the typical service, do repairs when needed and full restorations. He will test run your Webers so you know what's coming back to you. Well worth the money if you are not Weber literate. Good luck with the find! |
Man, I wish when people post these questions they'd also post a photo - or two. When is the last time anyone saw a 914-6 estate find photo on here?

1.Drain the gas tank.
2. Fill it with new gas. 3.Make sure the oil is clean, turn it over 20 times without ignition. 4. Fire it up and drive it. |
I really need a mechanic- I have no spark- -carbs seem ok i just sent out fuel tank to be cleaned- if there is any interest in this car i may just sell it as is- The body and interior are beautiful- absolutely no rust in hell-hole- interesting car because it is documented with tan houndstooth/silver exterior- i am told it belonged to the owner of a porsche dealership and was used at car shows-

Hi,I sent you a PM.The CDI cars with points get a light film of oil on the points they will not start.Do the matchbook and the car will start.It is always more simple than you think.Ciao Fred

If you plan on selling it, I wouldn't touch anything!!! Why take the risk? I am sure you have received some offers already. Post some pics and let the auction begin!!
