Ready to Take the Plunge-'87 Carrera Cabriolet-Opinions Please
I just had a PPI done by Franz Blaum for an '87 Carrera (link below) for which he gave a very favorable report. "One of the nicest ones I've seen in a year" was Franz's opinion. What do you think?

Looks great.
You can't go wrong with the G50/3.2 and the good PPI.

Looks like a keeper and well documented is a major plus. Pricing is a little strong for a cab.

Tail is distracting, as it was on mine.... I didnt like them then or now, just ruins the otherwise beautiful lines. Great color combo. Enjoy. Doubt you will find a nicer one for cheaper.

I get the whale tail----it's a love it or hate it thing and they do change the classic 911 profile. Personally, I always liked them. Thanks to everyone else for their input. Last edited by arcom; 01-08-2016 at 06:58 PM.. |

That's a beautiful car, I love Diamond Blue.
I'm personally a fan of the Carrera tail. I prefer it on a coupe but I think it works on a cab too. Sport seats are nice to have as well. I won't comment on the price because I'm asking the same for my 87 Carrera coupe with a lot more mileage (although the engine has been fully rebuilt from top to bottom), so WTH do I know If the car checked out at a good shop that knows these cars well, and you're OK with the asking price, then go for it.

logan2z--That's a beautiful car as well and I looked very closely at it. However, I'm a ragtop guy.

Congrats! That looks like a fair deal for both buyer and seller to me.

The market seems divided on the values of these cabrios right now. Some are saying mid 40s is way too strong money, but I don't see any selling for much less than that. I do think you could negotiate a slightly better price. I just bought an 87 cab with less than half the miles for a similar price, about 2 weeks ago. Was I lucky? Maybe. But cabs are hard to sell in the winter. I would try to get that a bit cheaper, if I were you. That said, even if you're over paying, never let your dream car go over a couple grand.

Make sure you take a good look at the top as well. If electric, the fasteners at the windshield can go and it can be another k or more to fix them. The tops need to be up to keep the proper fabric stretch unless you are using it as intended. These guys seem to get some nice cars occasionally, but always seem to price them at the top.

Last time I was in Motorcar Studio I looked over that car and it presented very well. Also, the guys running that shop are true car nerds and you really get what you pay for. I'll miss seeing it driving around the neighborhood. Good luck with the purchase!

Thanks TTrent...I've been talking with Chris at Motorcar Studio and he has been helpful and up front. So far I can't complain. Franz who did the PPI was very positive about the car only finding a leaky oil line at the thermostat. Leakdown test was 3% across the board. The only other thing is the tires...about 80% tread left but they're 10 years old, although Franz could find no signs of cracking anywhere. Current plan is to see the car Monday.

You need to change those tires 100%. 10 year old rubber is no good.

The dealer shouldn't be selling a car with 10 year old tires. That is a big no-no if it is sold with an Inspection sticker or certificate of inspectibility........or whatever that state requires. These guys should know better.

Unfortunately, age of the tires is not an inspectable item, just their tread depth and visible condition. Maryland tried to add a tire age limitation but it didn't pass. Ford says 7 years, NHTSA doesn't give a specific age but sets the max at 10 years for tires with no visible damage. The Rubber Manufacturers Assoc says condition only matters, not age. To me, 10 year old tires, even with 80% tread depth, no visible damage, and good road performance are questionable.
