Talk about test drive gone wrong

Wow- I feel bad for the seller. He and his car are torn up.

Lucky to have survived that. I feel worse for the prospective buyer....he was in the passenger seat and isn't the one who wrecked the car but got seriously injured.

Way too much power for those skinny rear tires...

How long before it's back on the market as an ultra-rare '77 Cab? :p

When I bought my car, it was on Michelins that were 13 years old. The car was "greasy" in almost any kind of situation that required any kind of traction. It was my first act to buy new rubber for the car, because those old tires were hockey pucks. Maybe that's what happened here? Not skinny rubber, but "vintage" rubber?

worth "more than $50k", yeah no s**t.

My comment wasn't as much directed toward the tire size but rather the fact that it looks like the seller put in a turbo motor (I see an intercooler or am I mistaken?)
Turbo motor + skinny rear tires = disaster

Ya' that's a turbo engine, and if it's really a 1977 Turbo then it didn't come with an intercooler, so someone added one of the lame stockers to it at some point.

No doubt that wider is better, with regard to tires (and a few other things :)), but the bottom line is the skinny tires are not a problem if the operator uses some common sense. Just idle chitter-chatter, though, since there are no details on the accident (maybe a sniper took out one of the tires:D).

PS - that said, those things can still surprise you even when you've had a lot of seat time in them; I've had numerous "whoopsie" moments, when showing off for passengers, that left me saying "oh ya' I meant to do that". :D

From the angle of the picture, I couldn't tell if it's a wide body car but the left rear tire sure looks skinnier than what would normally come on a turbo-bodied car

Ronnie's.930 01-20-2016 09:10 AM

^^^

The 1977 models came with 8" rears - they look tiny in pictures.

One other interesting detail is that is the Turbo a/c condenser in the rear tail (1/2 bay size). Also the Turbo fuel intention is there (K-jetronic / CIS). None of that means it's a real Turbo, though . . .

kc911s 01-20-2016 09:20 AM

Yeah- looks like she has a turbo air box to me.

dienstuhr 01-21-2016 11:37 AM

At least it was the owner driving, and not the prospective buyer.

THAT would've been awkward...

Vtec kicked in...
