Wanted to ask everyone if a "Mechanic Review Page" would help?

What good does it do to him to hold on to the car and not get paid?

There's more to this story...

I don't look at the world through rose colored glasses and I have also had horrible experiences with shops who have taken my money for lousy work and those that have led me to think they are doing me a big favor to work on my cars.

We have all had good experiences as well as bad. It always seems easier to write a rant than a complimentary evaluation, especially in the heat of the moment.

To toss an idea out there...

What about a city-based listing of shops, engine rebuilders, upholsterers and painters that we have had good experience with and would recommend to other members?

Right now I am embarking on my first heavy restoration project and would like to interview a couple metal workers and paint shops as well as upholsterers. I'd prefer to see us spread the word for those that provide the service they promise, in the agreed time and for the cost quoted and see their business grow...

But that's just me.....

Yeah, it's called YELP, Angie's List or Google.

It would be way to hard to control that type of thing. This board wouldn't be the venue. It's too hard to control these threads when it becomes too one-sided with someone's opinion - wrong or not.

Sorry you got burned, but Pelican isn't a sounding board for this stuff when it happens. Pelican was set up so you don't have to deal with mechanics and was established so it enables you to do everything yourself if you put your mind to it, so to introduce some sort of thread where people rate a mechanic seems opposite to what everyone posts here and tries to accomplish.

Again, if you got burned by a mechanic it won't the first and last time until you can do it yourself and be quality control.

So, to make a so-called 'Mechanic Review Page' sort of strikes me as everything this whole empire Wayne built is against. It's about getting your own hands dirty and learning.

Pelican is the right place to deal with bad mechanics or would you rather us not talk about cases like MM ?

Every DIYer will need professional help at some point. In fact, every pro will need another pro's help at some point. No one can do everything or know it all. The professionals here who share their knowledge freely are the best mechanics in the country. I wished I lived closer to any one of them !

Yeah, to that I would say that MM is entirely in a class by themselves. I stand behind what I say. Most great mechanics are already known, and word of mouth is all they need. And when you're in the hobby and people around the hobby you hear about them. Shade tree Porsche mechanics are everywhere. And if there is going to be a ***** fest about some mechanic that may or may not be good, or may or may not have had a bad day, or had another mechanic work on it in his establishment it's pretty pointless to me.

All the great Porsche mechanics, paint men, welders, etc are pretty well known - because they are smart and established.

However in this day and age I suspect everyone thinks they are a Porsche mechanic, just like every dealer out there thinks they have a pulse on the 911 market, and every seller thinks they have a condition #1 car.

So this lead me to think that I should tread carefully, ask the right people around here, and to consult them and give them a shout out if I am in their area for the best approach I should take. But that's me.;)

Sure, we should and we do talk about them. The OP is asking for a mechanic's review subforum. Not really Pelican's place. Plus, it may be counter to their business. A lot of car owners here don't realize that Pelican runs a wholesale business too, supporting shops. Would put them in an uncomfortable conflict of interest if one of their shops was getting bashed by end users.

What we do have IS this forum. Just ask and someone will give you the name of a good machanic. Ask and you'll get a list of all the machanics within 50 miles. No reason to go into it blind.

Some really good points made by Da'Count and others here, and along those lines, I find that review pages are almost worthless - for every review saying that a shop sux balls, there is one that says they are so good they can repair unicorn horns (even MM reviews are like this on Yelp, etc). Also, the truly crooked joints would find the Pelican review forum and create user accounts to pat themselves on the back and refute the bad testimonials from others (MotorMeister did that very thing in the many threads in the 911 forum slamming their business practices). Then those threads become nothing but a source of commedy.

As long as your crooked joint (according to Eric, anyway) never finds a female I care about I don't really care ...
