I don't mind letting it go at the lower end of market. I don't have the guts to let it rip. Mecum may not reach two people who know what a 993 is. I don't follow the market. What are clean 993 c2 trading for?

People are asking $50-70k for 993 coupes, depending on condition, mileage, etc.

If your mileage is legit (and your post indicates you are uncertain), and the condition/maintenance is excellent, yours would be toward the top of that.

People at Mecum are going to know what a 993 is.

I'm no auction expert, but I don't think your reserve should be a retail price. Maybe $40-45k, with an estimated sell price of $50-60, and hope you do better.

You MUST have a reserve, and stick to it. You MUST be prepared to pay the fee and take the car home. There is a lot of info 'out there' on how best to sell a car at auction, but you must realize that you are a one time customer for the auction company. The person who brings 5-10 cars to a lot of auctions gets handled very differently from the way you & your car will be treated.

I am making an assumption that you want a quick, clean, hands off deal. In my opinion, Mecum is not the place to go. That company is more known for American iron/muscle, and I doubt that a lot of Porsche buyers show up. Again, in my opinion, you would be better served by good, well regarded Porsche/sports car broker who may already know of people looking. Someone like Techweenie, or even the man himself despite the fact that he is in SoCal. (I'm not a shill; I have never met, or even seen, the man.)

Good luck!

If you're going to auction it I wouldn't go through Mecum either. As mentioned, they have more of an American classic and muscle car audience.

Depending on the auction, Mecum can be an OK spot. I'll say it again. Monterey! The Northwest does have a nice population of Porsches and Porsche enthusiast but it could be a crap shoot.

I'd wager that the OP is going with Mecum because they bring their traveling show to the customer, making it easy to get the car to the auction and, in the event it doesn't sell, get it home.

Mileage is legit, I'm just driving it a bit when sunny and dry. To cars and coffee and detailer etc. Mileage is 47,400 or so now. It is a solid, no stories car. Thanks for your input.

Exactly. I'm a 60 minute drive and 30 minute ferry crossing to the event. Great car show and people watching event.

Thanks for the advice. Mecum will be in my neighborhood. Techweenie is the man. I purchased an '86 coupe from him last year. Solid car, well described, smooth transaction.

Not this year it wasn't, a lot of cars didn't sell, Mecom in orlando was the same way, including for American cars.

Great for buyers, sucked for sellers.

Hopefully the west coast will bring some buyers. I really would like to move it along as I will be out of climate controlled space not long after auction.

Google "The economics of selling a Ferrari". This guy came out quite a bit better with a dealer.

Interesting.

I am still trying to get my head around the fact that Bonhams collects a $12.5k buyer's premium (20%) and $7.5k seller's commission (11.5%) on a $65k purchase (Pounds Sterling in this article).

And taxes are on top of that.

Barrett-Jackson apparently charges 10% for onsite registered private bidders.

And on top of the exhorbitant fees, attendees applaud when the hammer price ends up higher than reality says it should be. To me, auctions seem like borderline criminal enterprises.

Auctions are fine for some things but seem unnecessary for your car. A low mile well maintained 993 will sell without much fanfare. I'm not a dealer, flipper, or interested in buying your car. However, I am in Seattle and if you are interested send me a PM and I will get you in touch with a person in town that will help you sell your car, or possibly buy it from you, without all the expenses of an auction. I view action houses and casinos as similar enterprises. The deals are always skewed in their favor.

I Agreed with Mishwa. However I had good experience selling two cars on the BringATrailer.com (BAT) auctions recently. I suggest BAT over the traditional auction houses as I'd bet you'll get more money for the car with a lot less hassle and fees. Additionally they seem to be "the place" to sell air cooled 911s lately - just check out the $45K 911SC they recently sold.
