What is a real 914-6 GT worth
I have a buddy that owns a real 1970 914-6 GT, someone stopped by in his drive way offering 250k for the car. Is that about right or are they worth alittle more than that?

Sell it. One with ridiculous race history sold I think for $195,000 - so that price is great. Sell it.

Forgot to mention its a glockler built 914 6 GT, only 3 was built by glockler 2 went to the porsche racing team and one to the ceo of the porsche dealership in germany. Which is the car he owns now.

If that's the Glockler 914-6, then it's a pretty ugly car. Is it the one with the very strange VW 411/412 dual round headlights put on the front sloping hood? That is one bizarre 914-6, but it's not pretty and I don't even know if people really care or not - it's that bizarre. Post some pics if you can. When I have seen photos of the Glockler 914-6, I realized why they only made three or so...

It looks much nicer than I thought it would. With something so rare and unique as this who can really put a price on it? He should have decided to sell it at Pebble Beach last summer. I would not sell it to some guy walking up my driveway and offering $250K as this is a unique situation and a very unique car that deserves to be written up in an auction book with its history, pictures, etc.
I would not sell it through traditional channels and would get that whale tail off asap (it looks insane) and get the original lid back on, then approach some of the auction companies (when the Scottsdale auctions go off) and have them write it up and put a ridiculous reserve on it. I would not sell it for $250K right now. It could be a headliner car at the right auction (ie Porsche auction or Vegas) and would attract the right people. It is arguably the rarest 914 out there, the 916 could come second as they made more, and the 916 is worth at least a half-million now. |

If it were my friend, I'd say take the $250K offer.

The original color was canary yellow.
It's a factory built custom race car for MAHAG, a german car dealer. The car in question(9140431258) has been active in PCA and POC auto crossing and time triling since 1976. It was owned by Ron And Barbara Webb from 76 until 01. They, my wife and I towed together and raced for many years. They and it then retired to Utah. The pictures on STAZAK's sight were taken there when it had been sitting in a garage for 4 years after Ron's death. It was verrry dirty but no rust. It will receive PCA Zone 8, 1st place trophies for concourse, time trile and Auto-crossing for last year. Enough of concouring and racing at the same time. The tail was something Ron tried and I have left it as he had it, although it slows it down at the California Speedway and other long tracks. I may have to remedy that. I have the original deck lid. "Sold 24/07/70 (July 24th 1970) by the Germen dealer MAHAG where it was service through 1971. It was imported to the USA in 1972 and was at the Wester Porsche/ Audi Dealership in Monterey Ca. Dr. Marvin Taves of Reno Nv. owned and raced the car until it showed up for sale on consignment at Beverly Hills Porsche in 1977. Ron & Barbara Webb purchased it at that time and successfully time triled and auto crossed it with PCA & POC for many years until retiring to Richfield Utah in 1992. Upon Ronís death in 98 it was stored until I aquired it November 2002. The headlight treatment is thought to have been done by the German stylist Glocker. A similar work, with picture, is attributed to him in the book ìDas Grosse VW-Porsche Buchî. here is a little write up the owner did a few years ago trying to find more info on his car

If the offer was real, I'd take that money and run. Then I would buy a regular 914-6 with $50k of it and a nice condo on the beach somewhere with the rest.

I guess at the end of the day it's a 914-6 with some interesting history and bodywork. Some people say sell, others keep. Who knows? I think it might be worth more at a correct venue (ie auction) with a nice writeup, but how much more is the question. Depends how long he wants to wait, but I would sell the '67 S as well as this market is hot.
I think the 914-6 would be better brought back to the original color then raced at historic races. Someone who wants a unique car that will never, ever see a clone at some historic race should get it (ie. rich guys who want something no one else has or will ever have). It is special that's for sure and there aren't as many unique 914 variants available as are 911s, but it will take a special person who wants to pay the big money. I guess $250K is fair, as its definitely more than he paid and he still makes a tidy profit - enough to get a house pretty much anywhere in the US besides So Cal. |

I have to ask why is someone offering $250k not a traditional sale but going through an auction house is?
If you go through an auction you take the chance it won't hit the $250k and even then you have to pay the commission so you aren't coming home with $250k This car must have some sentimental value to your friend. If the buyer is real and this is in the ballpark for the car, why not???? I would rather sell to a private person vs an auction any day of the week. More personal sale and if it is a car you want to wind up in the hands of another good home you have the chance to feel the person out. Wild car and goo luck either way!!! |
