77 registered as a 69...question.....

The ad reads: 1977 Tub – registered as 1969 w/ matching VIN Tag 911 T - $30K OBO

These cars always seem like a hot potato. At what point did this 77 tub become a 69? This seller is straight forward, but as the car changes hands later, does the car start showing up as strictly a 69?

The question begs: if you have two rollers that are used to create one car, which car becomes the "identity"? I'm sure this happens quite a lot lately as the values have escalated.

I guess if you have the vin tag of a wrecked 69 you can graft it on a 77 roller and still call it a 69?

I was asked to look at a tub a friend of a friend wanted to sell... it was a bare Carrera chassis with a 71 T VIN tag welded in... and the CHP had accepted that number for the state assigned ID tag. The friend had bought the shell not knowing it was misidentified. I told him to sell it back to the guy he bought it from. Legally ID'd or not, no shop would want that thing on their property.

Hot potato is a good description. Very hot potato. Run away.

77 or 69?

Hi,at the very least it looks like a ball to drive.Nicely set up.But I am not sure if it would be legal.I used to have customers from N.Y.that had one made from two.Maybe the laws there were different.Fred

A lot of recent work was covered here:

Just completed. I'm always somewhat curious when huge projects get posted for sale with almost no miles on the end product. I would want to take it on a long long test drive before deciding.

I wouldn't touch a chassis with a swapped vin# Google vin tampering.

Best advice here. I wonder what ever happened to that Englishman who bought the '65 that ended up being the '67.
