What is the best way to market your car for sale?

Just do Craigslist, Pelican, etc? I'm already dreading the test drives and tire kickers.

PCA, both the web/magazine and your local chapter.

Craigslist is a cesspool for bottom feeders imho. I wouldn't buy anything more valuable than a few hundred bucks on craigslist.

I think it depends on what car it is and your price. If it's a cheaper and friendly priced vehicle, you will surely get bombarded from all over; no matter where you advertise it. Ebay Motors seems to be by far the most popular and busiest place to advertise. Atleast for an air-cooled cars. For the modern kind, CarGurus is a really good one. Maybe the best way for you to go to avoid much hassle is do a quick 5 day ebay auction. That should weed out too much hassle with people scheduling test drives, etc.

I think the only way to avoid dealing with test drives, tire kickers and general time wasters (babies that think they should be spoon fed every detail about an ancient car, and then want to buy if from you for far less than you are asking) is to let a shop/dealer sell the car on consignment - you lose some money but don't have any of the headaches.

As far as advertising it yourself, eBay for sure.

What is the best way to market your car for sale?

Not ebay, it's a bunch of wholesalers buying cars for wholesale.

Craigslist is more of a local sale, best for lower priced cars and of course more tire kickers.

Pelican and BAT get a lot of good enthusiast and talkers and negative enthusiast (want a steal/ deal) and negative talkers (think trashing of your car on a public forum). That is why there is ' Porsche Marketplace Discussion' and why Pelican started blocking responses to cars for sale ads. We do are trash talking here now

E-bay has a very broad market, little trash talking and tire kickers, but you still have to deal with it actively and there is abuse.

Consignment with a dealer is best for really high-end cars and is the lease amount of headache, but you pay for it. Sometime that is out weighed by the higher sell price a dealer can realize for you.

If you do go ebay, make sure to get a PPI done beforehand. That is the main rub with ebay and it's auction time limit: you don't have time to schedule a PPI yourself. Get one done, and post it in the add to reassure buyers that are bidding sight unseen.

I would give no value to a self-funded, conflict of interest PPI.

Besides, ebay auctions often end not meeting reserve. It's mostly just a cheap showcase with deals being worked out offline, which unless the seller is a tool (which sadly is often the case) does leave time for a real ppi to be done.

Bought my 993 when a local seller responded to my WTB ad.

Listed my 993 on autotrader.ca (I am in Canada) and Pelican. European buyers saw it on autotrader. Ended up selling to a US buyer on Pelican. Like was posted list on ebay with high reserve for marketing purposes.

So which one are you selling? 914 or SC? Maybe you can post here and one of the respond might be interested in purchase. I'm in the valley and looking for an SC. PM me.

This is great advice. For $300, it's a no-brainer. All things being equal, I'd rather see a self-PPI than none at all. At least the seller paid someone $300 for something on letterhead. Even just that says a lot. The paranoid nits are not going to buy your car either way. If it was a real high dollar car, I would even film the PPI, and just dump it on Youtube.

I would also make a video of you starting and driving the car. I would also say something in the video that proves you own the car, and it's being listed. Like saying your Ebay account name.

That's the fault of the dealer seller, not Ebay. If you want it to sell, don't have a crack pipe reserve. Or none at all.

I've sold P-cars on Pelican, Craigslist and BAT. From my perspective BAT was the easiest as the car will sell in a week. I did have to stay on top of my listing and respond to armchair critics and the occasional lunatic. However it was much easier than dealing with a bunch of dreamers, lowballers and wholesalers. PM me if you want any detailed info.

Can someone explain how "wholesalers" operate?
Are they different than a flipper who just buys and jumps title and sells?

Wholesalers, by definition, are not allowed to sell to the public (end-users). They can only sell to dealers.

My choice is contact William "techweenie" Kelley on this website. He is a very good "matchmaker" for nice P-cars.

I may be selling both of my cars. I'm just super busy right and not ready to deal with it yet. Just in the market research phase.
