whats up with the VIN on this 1987 911

in the photos we see 2 different VIN's although the last six are the same in both
one on the VIN compliance sticker in the door and then we see the one on the bulkhead?

all US G body cars are like that. the a pillar and door jamb vin are the US VINs and the trunk stamp is the Euro VIN that the factory does before it's determined what market the car will be sold in I suppose. Threw me for a loop first time I saw it as well.

As per amg643 post totally normal, back then when the chassis was built, they did not know if the car was going to North America or RoW.

Car for North America required a VDS code to replace the ZZZ in the VIN.

Do yourself a big favour, never discuss the ZZZ version with insurance company or the DMV...

I have several Porsche books, one even written on what to look for when buying, and I haven't found a reference to this in any of them. There are warnings to be wary of ROW cars, but no mention of legit U.S. cars having different VINs.

Completely confusing, but true. The ZZZ is on the chassis for VIN spot 4, 5, and 6 and ABO on the sticker. ROW cars have ZZZ in those spots on chassis and sticker.

The VDS code vary by year (and started with the 17 digit VIN in 1981), definitely not from your 79.

A: US Coupe
B: Engine
0: Passive Restrain, Seat Belt only.

From Bruce Henderson book:
