Price this: 1977 911/993 cab conversion, 3.6 SWAP, 993 Sport Seats

I listed the car originally for $32,000, and dropped the price to $27,500. My thought was, someone looking for a NICE 3.6 swap would pick it up, swap their old motor in, and get a 3.6 swap for near break even pricing.

Was thinking about reducing the price again to $24,500 because I really need the garage space, but its worth more in parts...

More details on the car below. What do you think guys? Am I way off? Am I better off parting it?

Porsche 993 Speedster Project- 3.6 engine Runs and Drives, Clean Title PRICE REDUCED

Category: Car
Location: Cardiff By The Sea, CA
Car Make: Porsche
Price: $27500.00
List Date: July 22, 2016
Description:
PRICED REDUCED by $4500 for a quick sale!

Up for sale is my 993 Cabriolet Speedster Project.

I picked this car up recently in project state, with the aim of completing it and driving it around as a fun weekend car. I have since changed my mind, and am going to keep playing with my 964 turbo and my ‘68 911R a bit more. Since there are such high dollar parts in this project, I was going to part it out, but it seems like such a shame when it's so close to completion! The car is registered in California and carries a clean CA title. It runs and drives.

Summary:
Runs and Drives
Started its life as a ‘77 targa.
Tons of Expensive Parts
Early 993 Sport Seats
Very healthy 3.6 swap and all supporting modifications

The Exterior:
The car started its life as a ‘77 911 Targa, though there is very little ‘77 targa left. The car was professionally converted to a 993 cabriolet body including the convertible top. I believe the kit is made my better bodies, and has turbo width flares front and rear. The install was quite well done. It has a replica turbo wing, with a cabriolet rear brake light. It has a Turbo S style front bumper, all the necessary bumper lights/fogs (all OEM), and OEM 993 headlights, and OEM euro tail lights. The wheels were just refinished (powder coated) in gunmetal, and are 18” OEM Carrera III wheels from a 997. They have BRAND NEW Toyo R1R tires. The car sits low and has a great stance.

As you can see from the pics, the Speedster top is unpainted. The PO was driving the car and the hood flew up, so there is so very minor damage to the front cowl area, and the OEM metal hood (in body color) had some minor damage to the corner, so I removed it for now. I bolted the silver fiberglass hood on so I could drive the car (it's off of an old racer I had, and will be included with the sale.)

The interior:
The interior has been primarily converted to 993/964. It has a 993 steering wheel, 993 dash, 964/993? door panels, etc. The car has an aftermarket stereo, and speakers

From what I’ve been told, the front seats are ULTRA-RARE, early 993 Sports Seats!! Yes, these are pre hardback, and have the coveted 993 stitching. Last pair I saw sold for $4k in fair condition. Lots of people describe these seats as even better than the hardback sport seats found later in 993’s. They are in good overall condition. They had a few minor tears that were repaired, and they definitely have fresh dye on them that looks great. The car also comes with rear 993 tan leather seats.

The running gear:
The car has a later 964 3.6 engine swap with the plastic intakes. A leakdown test was recently completed, and it was less than 3% across all cylinders. This is a very healthy engine! I just replaced all the spark plugs, had the valves adjusted, and installed a new distributor/distributor caps, and rotors. The old dizzy seemed to be acting up...

It is running the stock magnesium 915 trans that definitely has some oil leaks (though it's one of the nicer shifting 915’s I’ve driven.) I think the PO took the inspection covers off, and didn’t replace the gaskets.

Of course, swapping a 3.6 into an early chassis requires supporting from the likes of Patrick Motorsports or similar. I did not do the swap, so I don’t know what components were used. It runs and drives well though. Clutch grips fine, no issues with throttle, etc.

I think that’s about everything, though I’m sure I’m forgetting some things. The car is ready for the next owner to finish it up, and get it on the road. Or, as sad as it would be, part it out, and throw the 3.6 in some other hot rod car. Either way, I’m offering it at a good price!!

Parting it out might be your best option imo.

Thanks Rick. I agree. There are SO many high dollar parts on this build...its just not what's trending in the marketplace these days...

A shame really.

Any other feedback folks?

If those 993 seats are worth $4k, I don't think you have any choice but to part it. You'll have to go all the way with it though, as the market for cab/targa rollers seems to be non-existent.

I think it comes down to how much your time is worth. If you don't want to spend the next 4 months with this being basically a part/full time job, then keep dropping the price until someone bites. That said, if no action by $20k I say pull the engine and store for a future project, then burn the rest out of spite.

Mehoff, thanks for the feedback. I'm amazing I haven't gotten more takers simply for the 3.6 swap. Not sure many people are aware of the ACTUAL costs to do a 3.6 swap in an early car these days, and to have it handed to you in a nicely wrapped, fully drivable package is pretty dang cool.

This is the problem it's just an old used up Targa with a few nice parts, sub 20k you may find a buyer, otherwise that is a three year gig to part it out and get decent money.

Thanks for the feedback, Karl. Someone who's done these swaps before knows you're in 20k in no time for a 3.6 swap for an early car + supporting parts + trans. That's essentially meaning the seats+wheels+ the chassis are worth effectively NOTHING. That doesn't seem right, but hey, you may be right...

If it were just an old Targa with a 3.6 swap, it would bring real money.

The real problem is that it is just plain fugly, and is a frankenstein's monster mashup of parts that don't go well together.

Speedster with a turbo tail? Weird metallic purple color? Boxster wheels and shifter? Jarring silver hood?

It is a car that might be appealing to the A1A cruisers on South Beach, but that is about it. this looks like a donor car all the way to me.
