Price check - Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 1986

Any input will be much appreciated. I'm considering a 911 Carrera 3.2 1986 with 98k miles. Has steel turbo flares and brakes but the owner does not know if it is an original M491. I will assume it's an after market mod as there is no evidence otherwise.

The car was at some point updated to 90s look but restored to original impact bumpers earlier this year (front balance and fog lights look incorrect for a 3.2 Carrera).

External condition is good and the interior was recently redone.

Assuming the car passes a PPI, what would be market price for a private transaction?

(Pic is not great but only one provided by seller)

Check the M491 option code. We're talking tens of thousands of dollars difference in price.
Car looks ok, but we need more pics and info. Documentation? Carfax? Ownership history?

Normal 3.2 coupes routinely go for $35 to 45K+ all day long. For 98k miles, yours would be in that range, if it's a normal 3.2, and all is right with the world.

But you need to do more homework first.

Thanks NYNick. Agree on the homework, the plan is to do a very thorough PPI by a Porsche mechanic. Right now I have limited info and just this pic. I will gather more data.

If a normal 3.2 coupe is around $35-45k is there anything to add for the turbo flares/brakes, assuming itīs not an M491?

Seller does not know if itīs an M491. Will check for the option code but I think this is just a modified car. As you point out M491s go for a premium and the seller wouldīt miss that.

Price check - Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 1986

Buying to own and drive. I'm trying to establish fair pricing since I know the seller. Any views?

Sounds like you are relying heavily on the PPI.

Don't.
Someone recently made the same mistake and he's paying for it now.

Get more pictures.

Not sure I understand your point on the PPI. I will see the car in person, drive it and get more pics. Also interested in checking out the turbo brake set up and hubs/spacers.

Iīm told the car is leaking some oil though.

If it is not a factory turbo-look M491, then assume the worst Bondo slinging low rider shop in the world added the flares and did so because it was a mess to begin with...... that way you won't get hurt.
Miles mean nothing if it's been butchered. Buy it for fun, but don't spend over 30k.

Thanks Nachtfalter. Is there a way to determine how good is a conversion? Any particular things to look out for?

My reply sounds harsh, don't get me wrong, it looks cool. carfax it to make sure a wreck didn't help make the wide fender choice. Bring a small magnet, and hope for photos of the work..... because anyone looking to buy it from you later will do the same.

It's hard to put a price on modded cars even with a passing PPI.

The turbo flares, wing, front bumpers, mirrors, rockers are 'wrong'. What else is there, who knows, based on one pic, it's anyone's guess, hence the suggestion to get more pics and details.

I don't think the turbo brakes or flares add value...in fact, I think the flares subtract value, even though I personally like the look.

You gotta go see this car and inspect it top to bottom. I would personally be there for and during the entire PPI, especially to see it on the lift. All the incorrect parts are red flags. Check the weld joints carefully. Check the trunk carefully. Look for proper or improper overspray. And now you throw oil leaks into the works? How bad, how much and from where?

Much homework to do.

Those flares don't look "correct" to be factory. The edge looks too wide and rounded to be factory...

Views much appreciated, will do the homework and check the weldings.

I donīt mind a modified car if done right. Upon further comparison to a turbo look, this car does have several flaws when the seller tried to put it back to period correct condition. I am not an expert but can clearly see they left the 90s mirrors and rockers. It is not a deal killer but the value should reflect this. Now if the flares are incorrect then thatīs a whole different thing.

In any case I will come back with more info. Many thanks!

So,.... where are the pictures? He's not really trying to sell you a car on one photo right?

Hi, as we all know, the 3.2's have like doubled in price, within the past two years. As previously stated, once they have been modified they are worth 'a lot' less. and they will only depreciate compared to a stock one.

Opinion only, due to the good one's appreciating, and I assume that they will continue to to so, I would pay more and purchase a very tidy stock SC or a Carrera 3.2

Again, just my 2 cents worth.

I hear you on original cars, a stock car will be more collectible. Iīll figure out if this one can be had for a reasonable price. Otherwise I will not pursue.

Long time since I started this thread.

Owner just took the car to a reputable Porsche mechanic and fixed the oil leak. Flares look ok and seems to be in good general condition. Car has an offer for $27k and I can buy it at that price.

Seller is someone I know who takes good of his cars and I have bought from him in the past.

At 27k, the car would have been sold in less time than it took you to write your reply...
