best place to sell my 911?
So we've found the retirement home that we've been looking for. While my retirement dreams have included working on and driving my 1972 911t, it looks like I'm going to need to sell it to make all of this happen.
My question is, where is the best place to sell? I'm not a fan of ebay, but the car will bring what its worth. I need every dollar that I can get and don't want to sell for $10,000 less than its worth. This is an awesome car and I know that selling this is probably going to take me out of the Porsche game completely. If I don't do ebay, where is the best place for me to find comparables? Thanks for your help. Jay here are a few pictures and I'll post more about the car tomorrow. So here is this cars story. It was purchased new by a Doctor in Prescott, AZ from a Porsche dealer in the Phoenix area. Several years after, the second owner, a friend of my fathers and the BMW motorcycle dealer in Chino Valley, AZ, acquired the car. He then located a wrecked 1978 911SC that he purchased for the 3.0 engine. The SC had just over 17,xxx miles so the engine along with a new set of weber carbs was installed in the 72. I don't believe that he put 5000 miles on this combination before the car was parked because he was no longer driving. Somewhere in this time period, there was some minor damage near the drivers tailite area and the quarter panel was repainted. Unfortunately, they did not use Sepia when they painted the quarter panel. In 2010 we were informed that the second owner had passed and the car was sitting in a garage in Chino Valley, AZ. I was fortunate enough to purchase the car and hauled it to Southern Colorado. I spent the next many months going through the brake and fuel systems to get the car up and running. We enjoyed the car for the next year or so and then due to health issues with my parents, the car was not driven much. The car was loaded up and taken to spray off the dust and take a few pictures. I'll spend the nest couple of weeks charging batteries, refreshing fuel and getting the car ready to drive. This car retains 90% of its original paint, other that the drivers quarter, and is completely original with no rust. The only changes were the installation of the 3.0 and the passenger rear bumper to allow for the second exhaust outlet. The second owner modified the original muffler for the right side outlet and I have replaced that with a Dansk dual outlet muffler. I still have the original exhaust. The car currently has 87,528 miles and the 3.0 has less than 25,000 miles on it. I have the original 2.4 MFI engine that was running well when removed. I also have a set of Audette restored H4's and a new from Porsche, steel "S" front bumper that have not been installed. Apparently my original comments make it sound like I'm going into an assisted living to sit and dream about my youth. This could not be farther from the truth. We have found a beautiful house with a 4 car garage that I plan on enjoying for many years. I have many other projects that I am looking forward to working on. I hate to sell the Porsche but it is the most valuable car that I own and the money will go a long way towards the house. I have a message sent to techweenie and looking forward to his help in finding a home for this great car. Thanks for all your suggestions. post some photos and some information of your car.
if its the car in the signature sounds like its a 72T with a 3.0. do you have the original motor as well? not having the motor will hurt your value. but lets see some detailed photos and im sure plenty will chime in and I'm sure you will even get a few offers as well. cheers |

As others have said, BaT seems to bring the most consistent prices.

BAT won't always bring what your car is "worth". Only you and a buyer can come to that number. For example, I sold a car on BAT, it didn't meet reserve, a bidder contacted me and I sold for $10k more than the highest bid on BAT. Don't believe everything you see on there.

So the car is coming out of storage this weekend. I'll post pictures and info about the car and would appreciate any and all opinions. I do have the original engine complete with the MFI. The older gentleman that installed the 3.0 was a friend of the family and I helped him acquire the wrecked 1978 SC that was the donor many years ago. This is a bought new in Arizona car that I brought to Colorado and has been stored inside always.
I'll look into BAT. I thought that was a SoCal thing that was similar to Craigsllist. I'm guessing that it is country wide? I did have a figure in mind for the car but after a little searching think that my original pricing is low. Not trying to gouge anyone, just want what the car is worth. Hopefully, pictures soon. Thanks for the replies.

BAT is going to want to go no reserve. If you want a reserve they will ask that you agree to a reserve that will be several thousand less than what you may think it is worth.
It does seem to attract a nationwide (even worldwide) group of "experts" of varying degrees that will criticize your car from every angle (even angles that don't exist). If you do sell, I'd recommend getting good pictures in good lighting, you may need to experiment with different lighting or times of day to get it right - NOT something off your cell phone. Be forthright in listing any deficiencies. That all said, it seems that historically the autumn and winter months don't necessarily bring out the most buyers since a large part of the North American buyer pool is going into the colder weather. Here is a link to a 911T search on BAT: 911T | Search Results | Bring a Trailer Best of luck.

Excellent advice in this thread. I concur with bobbyp.
The market has cooled off substantially over the past 90 days. If you can afford to I would currently wait until next spring before you consider selling to see where the market goes. You will inevitably now be contacted via private message by numerous dealers wanting to "help you" by taking the car off your hands. Ignore the buzzards and sell the car yourself on either BAT or ebay. |

If needed, Pay someone to detail your car
Pay someone $100 to photograph your car using their $3000 camera

![]() As far as the Porsche is concerned, I would try selling here first. The price of advertisement is right, the crowd is knowledgeable, and your car will go to a good home.

Contact techweenie. He is a 72 specialist. He knows them all but knows more than most about 72s. As such has connected to people with a similar interest and can help you have a smooth transaction. Cost of his services will be less than BAT fees.

Techweenie is respected around here so if he is the expert on these model years I would contact him at techweenie.com to get his opinion.

Having just got through selling the same car (72 T with a 3.0 transplant + the original motor included in the sale) I have one piece of advice: be patient. It took me 6 months. I was high on the price to begin with, but I knew that, and did so so I wouldn't undersell the car. I came down more than what I thought I'd have to, but not more than I was willing to accept. The market has definitely cooled over the last 6 months (if I'd sold last year I'd have probably made 5-10k more). But list it at not a dollar less than you'd like to see, be willing to negotiate, and above all, wait for the right buyer. You'll find one eventually.
