Looking for a boxster. What to look for.
I've been a member here on Pelican for almost 16 years (ouch)...I noticed my last login was in 2011. This is due to my releasing both of my 944's many years ago. I am now looking to explore the Porsche world again. This time for my wife. Looking for a older Boxster, or something in the same price range. 8-15kish. 944's gave me much grief , but have my heart. Are Boxsters more reliable? Can I really find a good example for this price range?

Yes, you can definitely find a good 1st generation (986) in that price range. Avoid the 2.5Ls (1997-98), they're too underpowered. If you can swing an S, it's worth the extra cash for the additional power. They're extremely reliable cars if well maintained.

At $15K, there are 987s available - these have the improved IMS bearing; more important, the interior styling is much improved.
Plenty in So Cal if you're willing to buy long distance.

I own a '99 and the "lack" of power doesn't bother me. If you are going to forgo the markup for the S, look at the 97-99 cars with 2.5l engines as they have a lower IMS failure rate than the 2.7 in the 00-04 cars. Or, as was mentioned, jump straight up to a 987 one for the same as 986S money.
