Another find... buy it? 1985 Carerra
Hey guys. Came across another 911 in my budget.
1985 911 Carrera sunroof coupe -118k miles -Matching numbers -Seats re-upholstered -Salvage title from the 80's and owner not sure why (no obvious damage) -No rust -Clean interior/exterior Asking 26k will take lower 20k range. Other than getting a PPI and being cautious, is this a good deal for a driver 911? Thinking about getting it next weekend if it doesn't sell. At low $20k's? Buy it and drive the hell out of it. Salvage title means nothing if buying to enjoy/own long term.
Get a PPI to verify the drive-train is in good order, but expect to need to address items such as tie rods, bushings, rotors, plug wires, etc that should not impact your offer, but will require nominal investment on your end. Also try and have them identify the source of the salvage. The big no-no is probably already covered given the car has been on the road for so long since (flood), so you're probably looking at theft or accident. Have the guy check the impact zones and suspension pick-ups.....as long as any past damage was in front of the shock towers and did not damage suspensions pick-ups, WHO CARES!!! It's a unique color combo and a nice looking car. Buy before you kick yourself for missing out. (BTW....should go without saying, but verify NO RUST) |

I saw that on CL, take a look at the rear lid fitment. Paint looks nice though.

Thanks guys.
And Matt yup I do see the gaps off a bit but hard to tell exactly since I also have a pick of engine and might just be the way rear lid was installed. Either way 20k a bad deal? Sounds pretty good. |

Replacement speedo. The correct speedometer will go to 150 MPH, not 160 MPH.

That's not correct. All the cars after 1983 (some 1982's) came with 160mph speedos until of course the model change with the 964. But all 3.2's and some sc's came with 160mph speedos.

Looks like a good entry level 911. At low $20k, it will sell quick if it runs good regardless of prior accident damage and mechanical issues. Jump on it.

Actually I am correct. I have owned several these cars which all had 150mph speedometers. It was the midyear cars that had the 160 mph units. I have seen a 160mph unit in a Carrera 930.

For low 20's, the speedo can be out of a Cadillac.

Standard Carrera speedos in the US went to 160mph and are dual scale (mph/kph).

Back in the 80's, that car was damaged so bad that the cost to repair was more than the car was worth. It is only in the past few years that these cars are now so expensive that people are willing to buy salvage title cars. Also, someday, we all sell our cars.

Low 20s, that's an easy decision if you are wanting it for a long-term driver.

no brainer...
Buy it if your plan is to keep it and drive it.
