1984 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR ‘Backdate’ Outlaw • Petrolicious

Anyone can ask any price they like for any car, doesn't mean its going to sell at that price. That's a really nice car, with an interesting motor. I agree its priced at a point where I don't think it will sell, but who knows?

pu911 02-23-2017 05:50 AM

Other similar examples have sold recently for similar money- doesn't look out of line to me.

I really like that car! (But hate the price )...

Cool car but not a $235k car in my opinion.

The Flyin Hawaiin car from BAT seems like a way more intricate build and the reason it brought the big bucks.

1984 Porsche 911 RSR Recreation | Bring a Trailer

Was listed here a few months ago for $169k. Not sure what it went for but it was for sale for almost a year.

1972 Porsche 911 S/T Recreation | Bring a Trailer

It looks to me like the clone market has gained strength recently- cars are selling quicker for more money now than they were a few months ago.

Not your typical clone.. the car you listed was raced in period. I would take that 72S over any back date clone Singers included ;)

My question is:

1) Is it a backdate? This term is so in vogue right now. What is it backdating to? I would say modified.
2) Is it an outlaw? Is it automatically an outlaw if it's backdated? Really?
3) Is it a Carrera RSR? No. Can it be 'backdated' to a Carrera RS or RSR? No. Can it be a replica of a RS or RSR like Mustangs can be replicas of Shelby GT350s? Yes. Is it a clone? No, it's not a clone.

So we have here a 'backdated', 'Carrera RSR' that is an 'outlaw.'

Sorry guys I'm as tired by the terminology as the cars at this point. I'd say it's maybe hotrodded in the California sense but to me it's gotten way out of control - including the asking prices.

They really tortured the photo files to show "interesting" coloration. The gray is just a gray.

The market had spoken once before.

This car was for sale last year at $230ish at AK. It was taken down and re-listed for $179,000. It is a great build. I did a rally in New England with it right after Steven built it. It was awful fast...... This was a $170,000ish buy not build. There is a distinction.

To me the best RSR for sale is at Canapa's. Lee G's Kevin Jeanette built 72 RSR; I believe the ask is close to $275,000. It is a very authentic (not absolute) build with many original components..... The build was $200+ unlike many of these other builds.

Canapa Description:

- RSR recreation built by Gunnar Racing
- 2.7 liter, twin plug, small fan, factory high-butterfly MFI RS motor
- 915 gearbox

This 1972 Porsche 911T is believed to have been converted into a full steel-bodied 1973 Porsche RSR configuration in the late 1970s by Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville, FL. Butt welded factory flares were added to the rear quarters and front fenders along with the correct front and rear valences, and the car was fitted with a 2.7 liter RS motor. The car was purchased by Kevin Jeanette of Gunnar Racing in 2007. It would be sold to a client who was looking for the ultimate normally aspirated Porsche street experience - a road legal RSR.

Work began in 2008 when the client commissioned Kevin and his crew to restore the 911 to as close to actual RSR specifications as possible. The car was stripped down to a bare metal tub and over the next two years it was meticulously built up as an RSR. Adding to its accuracy was the fact that a rare factory Martini RSR was sitting by its side during the whole process acting as a guide. From the strut tower brace copied from the Martini car down to making the correct windshield fluid bottle mount the 911 became an RSR.

The engine is a Type 911/85, which is a 1977 2.7 with a 7r case. This is a rare twin plug, small fan, factory high-butterfly MFI RS motor. The fuel injection was rebuilt by Pacific Fuel Injection. Being a road car the engine was tuned to run on pump gas (although it wouldn't mind a tank of 100 octane from time to time.) The rally-geared 915 gearbox was rebuilt by James Cox of Cox Motorsport. With a tall fifth gear and shorter third and fourth it makes for a very streetable car, with a top speed geared at 150mph. The 9 and 11 inch wide Fuchs were supplied by Weidman Wheels, and were shod with Michelin TB tires. Factory Bilstein RSR struts were fitted, along with a host of other original RSR parts and pieces.

After two years, the nut and bolt rotisserie restoration was completed, and the car went directly to the 2009 Porsche Parade in Keystone Colorado where it scored 297.6 out of 300. Even with its near perfect show car restoration, this 911 was not built to lounge on the show lawn. It would go onto participate in the Targa California, the northeast's Mountain Mille, and many other public road rallies in the eastern US. It would cover over 12,000 reliable and exciting miles (19,000km) during the next six years.

In early 2016, Karrosserie of Devon, PA would execute a high-level cosmetic refreshing of the 911, which included a new coat of Signal Yellow paint, and the return of the Fuchs to Weidman for a cleaning and recoating. New Michelin TB tires were fitted, new batteries were installed, as well a new fuel bladder (tolerant of today's pump fuel blends) being fitted to the 24-gallon factory fuel cell.

Many professional Porsche race drivers recall the RSR as being the best-balanced and most enjoyable to drive of the production based racecars. This RSR recreation is ready for you experience that sublime feeling out on the open road any time you wish. No crew, no helmet, just turn the key and drive.

Something to do with sales tax and/or capital gains tax, I cant remember. Rich people set up Montana LLC and get great tax advantages.

Sooooo a vinyl wrap, some graphics and mark it up from $170 to $235? 38% mark up for maybe 5 grand in wrap and graphics, not bad.

Like Luke, I know both these cars. Different cars but both done to a very high standard.
One a very accurate recreation of a factory RSR and the other a wide bodied longhood that was built to be driven.

A former Steven Harris owned/commisioned built car you can be assured that it has been done correctly.
That car was built by an owner(SH) who has an eye for the "right" details. From what I remember the Rothsport built drive train was well executed with enough power for some track use but mild enough for the street.
The car I saw was just perfectly dialed in...suspension, brakes, power, it was about as good as one could get.
Like I said, a SH owned car will not disapoint, the man gets the details right.
Not sure what they are thinking with the wrap? To my eye,it just looks wrong and certainly doesn't not add any value in my book, if anything, it cheapens it. Why cover a perfectly executed paint scheme? Makes me wonder if they are hiding something.
I think the ask with that wrap has jumped the shark. Great car though...

Lee G's yellow RSR at Canepa? A clone, tribute or whatever you want to call it,
IMO(and many others)it is about as close to a real RSR that one can get.
I've driven in it and have witnessed the effort that went into making this car into as close to a real RSR. It is a car/build that sets a mark in many areas.
Built by Kevin J,who is world renowned for building/restoring legendary Porsche cars, this car is no excetion, which means that is very well executed.
Lee G has placed a few cars on the lawn at PB so he knows what he's doing and this example is no exception.
Worth every dollar of the ask IMO.
Two great cars that where owned, built and driven by guys who didn't cut any corners.
Which one would I want? Both, minus the wrap.:D

It's also a way around emissions.
But now the CA Highway Patrol has been coached to check Montana Plates for the reasons mentioned. So the benefits are almost gone. The fines are pretty high if you get caught living here with a out of state registered vehicle past the grace period.
