Do I include the original engine or not?
Subject car is a 1976 911S Targa. The mid-year, and yes, the less desirable of the 911 Porsches. I know. But it was the first Porsche that I got and I've been working on it for the better part of a decade. It is also the first car that my Dad and I worked on.
After tinkering with the 2.7L and getting impatient, I pulled it out, put it in the corner of the garage and found a decent 1981 3.0L. I did a top end on that, and replaced the head studs properly. The car really moves now. ;) But (yawn . . you've heard this story before) I am rebuilding the 1984 engine (more importantly, it needs to be funded), and thus the thought -- how should I sell my 76 WITH or WITHOUT the original 2.7L motor. Car has about 100K, sport seats, driver quality interior. Every Porsche-instinct inside me says to sell the original 2.7L together with the car. It seems like the proper -- no, morally right -- thing to do. But there is also a part of me that thinks it won't really increase the price of the sale. Right? I need someone to check my logic before I decide how to move forward. TIA for thoughts, comments, or tomatoes thrown in my direction. |
Offer it with the chassis, but be willing to make whatever deal comes up. Just advertise it with and without engine pricing.

Yeah. Like Matt said offer it with and without. Some won't want the hassle to get it home or care about originality. Others will be exited to have it.

I as an owner of several 911's with non original engines appreciate your level of consideration. I wish the owners of my cars kept the motors with the cars.

Thanks guys. Basket case, engine. Channeling Seinfeld character -- No Picture For You!!

Personally I've never broken up an engine and car, not if they are original. I'm sure I've sold cars that have been broken up, but not on my watch. I would offer it with the motor, future generations will thank you. Just ask anyone with a Pre-A who had their 2 piece engine chucked so someone could put a 912 motor or a Corvair motor in there. A 2.7 might seem like nothing now, but years from now that car will be special.
