1967 911S New Purchase
I recently became a Porsche owner for the first time. I have wanted one since I was a teenager, 40 years ago when I first drove a 914. This particular car is a 1967 911S that was owned by a relative who died 24 years ago. It was his favorite car and was always garaged and almost never driven since his death. He always took very good care of the car. He purchased it used in about 1970. The car has 89,500 miles with the original engine and transmission. I believe the interior is completely original and has not been altered down to the 1967 dated lap belts. According to the Kardex the car had only three options-tinted windows, Webasto gas heater, and exterior driver side mirror. My aunt inherited the car and when she recently passed away I purchased the car from her estate. Unfortunately for me, the estate had an appraisal done so I was not cheap. The car runs well but needs new shocks. I think the original shocks are still on the car. It needs some minor body work and does leak a little oil. The 4.5 inch Fuchs wheels were changed to 5.5 inch and are dated 11 67. It was repainted about thirty years ago but in the original polo red color. This car has basically been hidden away for the last 24 years in a garage. I had a local Porsche mechanic look over the car before purchase and he could not find any major issues with the car. I am definitely not any sort of an expert and don’t claim to be but wanted to put it out there for comments from those of you who are more knowledgeable. Any help what I should insure this car for would be greatly appreciated.

That's a sweet car! Probably needs to be insured in the upper $100k range.

Whatever you do, do not sell it. Keep it. That is a rare find my friend. Find a really, really good Porsche mechanic -- not necessarily your local dealership -- to check everything before you start driving it around. If you can't afford to have it checked over, wait until you can. You are now the caretaker of a piece of history. Congrats.

The estate had an appraisal done, you bought it, and are now asking here what to insure it for?

$150-$175. Nice find. What did the estate appraise it at out of curiosity?

Off topic from your question, but don't do any restoring of a car like this. Fix things that don't work. But unless there is a huge dent on the other side. I wouldn't do any body and paint work trying to make it perfect. Door dings are what normal cars have.
The prior owner of mine did a repaint and I wish it was left alone. My car has this great all original 38 year old leather with normal wear. And then a perfect, shiny, dent and rock chip free exterior. They just don't match each other.

Sucks that the original wheels are gone, a nice restored set will set you back about $7K or so... Check and make sure it still has the original carburetors too, should be Weber IDS - not IDAs.
Cool car, take good care of it!

Going to be interesting- would be fun to know what it was appraised at. Imagine his surprise if it was a somewhat low estimate for the estate and now he seeing some high figures.

I second 1979-930s comments... do not restore the car. Leave it as original. Original cars bring more money and will in the future. Sure you can rebuild a gearbox or engine, but use Porsche parts and document, document with paper and photos. Enjoy it and drive it, frequently.

Maybe it's just how the pictures appear on my computer screen, butt the rear of the car is sitting so low, and the left rear wheel even appears to be tipped in at the top, that I would check to see it one or both of the torsion bars are broken, and/or that the torsion tube is not broken from rust or impact damage.

I would tread carefully about who you let work on this car. Parts have a way of being "replaced" with functional but incorrect "substitutes."

I had a 67S and the PO took it to the same shop for 20 years that systematically stole parts off the car. The car had a clunk in the transmission, it needed the limited slip additive, instead the shop said it need to be rebuilt and charged the PO for removing the very valuable 901 limited slip and replacing it with a normal diff. The 67S would not pass emissions, Duh!, and so the shop said it needed a valve job and swapped out the S cams for normal cams. Shop also swapped out the S tachometer for a normal one. Be careful who works on your cars!! |

Mechanic Search Matt Kirk
I am looking for a mechanic named Matt Kirk who may have worked on my 1967 Porsche
911S in the 1970's. I was told he had moved to Florida. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
