another valuation request

Hello All, it has been a while since I have posted, I hope everyone is doing well.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine asked me to assist him with the sale of his 1962 356B T6 Super 90 cabriolet, just trying to get a range of value, sorry I do not have photos at this time.

He had the car appraised by a qualified vintage car appraiser but we all know that valuations for insurance purposes and those of sales taking place in the real world can differ by a wide range.

My friend has owned the car for approximately 25 years, he is the second owner. It was originally sold in Germany. Original color was blue, possibly Bali? now it is White over Red leather (dash & seats) with added vinyl headrests.

Original numbers matching is what I have been told, however, waiting for COA to verify.

1.6 L flat four was rebuilt with approximately 36,839 KM's, dual carbs, dual vent grilles, engine & bay are very clean. 4 speed transmission, VDO gauges are clear, functioning and in excellent condition.

The body is solid, with straight lines and even gaps. Black removable hardtop in very nice condition, the frame and undercarriage are solid and well maintained in very good condition.

Suspension is independent front & rear in very good condition, Steering and brakes in very good condition with tires also in great shape, waiting for confirmation of age.

The wheels are original 10-slot steel/chrome with chrome hub-caps and emblems in very good condition. Door panels are excellent as are the door pockets. Doors, sills and jambs are solid with rubber mats in excellent shape.

Carpets are black/charcoal German square-weave with rubber mats in excellent condition. Trunk is solid and very clean with fully fitted vinyl liner also in excellent shape.

Convertible top/Tonneau cover is black canvas in excellent condition, the weatherstripping is supple and intact in very good condition.

Windows are manual crank with no etching or scratches in excellent condition as is the windshield. Dual mirrors are chrome in very nice shape.

Original Blaupunkt AM/FM push-button radio with front speakers in operable condition.

The bright-work, bumpers and bumper guards, luggage rack, grilles, light & gauge bezels, window trim, emblems are in fine to excellent condition, interior and exterior handles, cranks & mirrors in very good to fine condition.

Overall condition based upon professional appraisers opinion is #2 with #1 being Excellent.

Low production 356B T6 Super 90, highly collectible vintage Reutter bodied Porsche, very well done restoration, carefully maintained by owner of several Porsches enjoyed and properly stored.

I know what Hagerty says, what do you say is a realistic value?

Probably impossible to really give a value based solely on information. Some say 25% reduction for wrong color, others say if very well done no deduction. There are open car experts who can give you a better idea than going by online values like Hagerty. Also location changes value. Expense to go to where car is for evaluation and shipping to final destination costs figure in. Who did the restoration can also affect price. US or Euro spec as well. If owner thinks it is worth Hagerty #2 it would maybe be worth it to find true 356 open car expert for PPI before sale. Alex Finigan at Paul Russell and Company comes to mind.

I am not an expert on 356 pricing. Agree with pmax that you need to go to 356 Registry.

But here's a data point: I recently sold a color-changed 356C cab for high $50s. But it was one owner... a #2 B S90 cab would be a bit less, I suspect.

That is solid but things wrong C coupe money. It all depends on condition. A solid Euro SC cab that was rough but complete,thick bondo drivers door, ripped drivers seat etc and now for sale on TheSamba in N.C. for ridiculous money sold for 95K I looked at it the day the ad came out and the next day it left on a trailer for N.C. And S90 cabs are valued higher than both C and SC cabs.

Thanks for your input on this, I'm not certain the owner is thinking along the same values as suggested. A quick search turns up a couple of cars, I realize the data points are not exact, one sold last year and the other is currently for sale.

You can't buy a decent cab of any sort for under $100k Good luck getting help at the registry. You'll have to pay your $55usd to post in that forum.

You can't post unless you pay your membership which would be $55 USD for Canadians. It gets you the magazine which is what that club is all about. Yes, there are some very helpful people online but I don't see much talk about valuations there. Its not like Pelican at all. I'm sure Adam, who is a member, knows the market well. I've lusted for a cab but for under $100k you are getting a project unless the market has come off a lot recently.

Yeah, there isn't much chatter on the Registry forum about values, most guys aren't looking to sell their cars and get pretty grouchy when people talk about how much they are going for now. They all remember the good old days when you could open up the Sunday paper and get a Speedster for $500.

What was so good about the good old days anyhow? You could also buy a house in San Diego for $15K when this paper was printed. If I could go back in a time machine it wouldn't be to buy a ratty old 356...

My old boss sold a 904 for $4000 to buy a house. Still owns the house and it's likely worth $2 million today.
