Are rare Porsches gone from the market.. ??

I've always enjoyed checking out inventory of high end players like Sloan, Marshall Goldman, Canepa, and similar because they had the most unique Porsches. Both in rarity and color..

However, looking at their site lately, there really isn't anything exciting..

Have most of those unique cars been bought out by high end rollers from oversees? Or maybe the market is a bit down, so sellers are holding out?

Regardless, it is always a thrill to see something rare to come up for sale and for public to see

Hopefully most of those cars did not leave our shores for good.

Like any older car they eventually disappear from the market. I remember shopping for my old SC back in 2004 - I picked up an Auto Trader and found dozens of air cooled 911s. Mid Years, SCs, Carreras, plenty to pick from and relatively cheap. I bought the (now gone) SC for $12,700, drove the piss out of it and sold it for the same price nine years later.

The quality cars for the most part have been bought up and are not changing hands. Those that own them know what they have and are holding onto them. What is left is a lot of junk. Occasionally a good car comes along but the days of the uneducated seller are long gone.

Rare?

There is a 93 RS for sale at $1,000,000......
Plenty of air-cooled cars for sale.....every ad has "rare" in it....the prices have escalated too fast and now there are too many "rare" expensive air-cooled cars for sale that are not so "rare".

Really where? is it a 3.6RS or 3.8RS. If 3.8RS it is correctly priced +/-. A 17 mile 3.8RSR recently sold for $2.25mm. With the low production numbers for the 964 in US specification the 964 in most all variations are some of the rarest air cooled Porsche's imported especially if you break them down between 89-91 and 92-94 MY cars. Even on a global scale they are very low production numbers compared to all other air cooled Porsche's

The 964 C2/C4 coupe is still climbing in value for cars that are in better than #3 condition. Most everything on the market sits because it is less than #3 and more likely less than #4 condition with hidden issues.

Still some gems out there. Most of the rare/special cars exchange hands privately or will come out at the highend auctions.

Need to wait for the auctions like Amelia Island and Pebble Beach for the rare/special ones.

Road Scholars recently sold quite a few rare models recently and have a nice 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS for sale.

The 964 RS's are starting to show up for sale- not exactly rare but not too many in US, that will change. One 964 Carrera cup listed at $450k.

Quiet sales, for the most part.

I know of a 964 RS quietly for sale for a million.

I have noticed there has been a buying frenzy for the past few years and now quality cars are not changing hands publicly. Rising prices brought cars to market from those looking to cash out. Now you have more owners with their desired classic car that plan to keep them for a very long time. If you don't need the money why sell?

Some 964 RS have been coming through Canada since we have a 15 yr rule. A local dealer has had a couple in the past few years and just sold a polar silver and a rubystone.

They also have a guards red 92 RS for 375k USD not listed. I am unsure the mileage etc. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvYXSmMYRTk

I think a lot of what you are seeing from many of the big Consignment Houses is a correction. The websites listed at the beginning of this thread mostly handle cars on consignment. Which means they approach people to sell their car, and many times the owner says sure, "if you get me $XXXXXXXX, I'll sell it" . In a hot market these websites get lots of cars because the prices keep going up and up, so even when owners want an inflated price, the market can bear it. The problem is now, the market can't bear it, so when these seller's approach owners, they can no longer say they will list cars at last year +20% price. It's the same guys like me run into when we are out there buying, sellers are quoting last year's prices and wanting more, and we are offering less, which means less buying.
But it also means a lot less window shopping for the average guy who loves looking at pics of cars that are sooooo cool, but that he can never buy. I know of many high end car places like Fantasy Junction who have a "500 club", guys who have walked into their place 500 times and never bought anything!
Expect a much more hum-drum selection in the coming days, no one is going out on a limb in this market. Today I passed on a car I would have driven all night for a couple of years ago, it felt weird.
