Advice on value: rusty, bastardized '75 Targa junk show

Hi all, I've kind of dropped off the Forum for the past year and a half but it's time to re-engage and get an idea of what this car and associated parts are worth. I have been slowly improving it since my purchase about 10 years ago, and can continue to plug away as storage and space for the vehicle isn't a problem and I have tools and the inclination. However, I am also contemplating the purchase and restoration of a property abroad, which would then mean much less time near the car and it may be time to let her go and use what little funds I can get out of her for new adventures.

Here's the beta:

'75 targa with rare factory hard top
Motor is a 1971 2.2 with weber carbs mated to a 5 speed 901 transmission.
Paint is complete crap (car was a metallic brown is now white, with some panels including back deck and front fender non original)
Rust!!!!!!!!!!
Many parts including fiberglass ducktail, set of fuchs and some other odds and ends such as pressure fed tensioners and external oil cooler that have yet to be installed.
Car runs and drives OK, but engine does smoke on start up and on deceleration, which indicates the need for a valve job in the future.

Because this thread is useless without photos, here are a bunch of them. Thanks in advance to everyone who offers insights and comments, even Rawknees (don't worry, bro, I know it's a targa but I also have a vehicle with turbopowahh that is my daily driver).

My wife would kill me...

Matt, I was thinking I would PM you directly and convince you it's your next baby, hahahaha! But I couldn't resist letting the peanut gallery here take some pot-shots first. Maybe I should list it on BAT! With a reserve of $40k! That could be fun!

Matt Monson 07-13-2017 10:28 AM

Only thing holding me back is a 6 week old. I've got too much baby poop to take on restoring a baby poop brown targa. Unless you wanna trade for a low mileage 99 Boxster...

I love the Jetta Recaro's, I turned one into a desk chair.

Ha! I've got an even rattier '74 Targa close by in Basalt that I'm building up as an OutlawRatBajaRoadkillRod that oozes so much patina, I have to sweep the garage every time I break out the grinder to detail it. And it's pretty much priceless; probably couldn't even give it away. Love it, not having to worry about dings or getting the right color or year or make of parts and being able to use up other junk from the garage or the yard. Just wish Rust Converter turned it other colors than black. Anyway, looks like there's a few bits in your pile of junk that could move my rat closer towards that Concours level if you care to lighten your load. Trade you for some classic skis that are out back if you want, or for some splintered footboards or warped door cards. Let me know if you'd want to sell some specific pieces or trade from my pile of stuff that I can't bring myself to throw away. Thanks.

Bump for some actual feedback regarding value.

Not interested in trades right now unless you have a VW westfailia camper with a water-pumper engine and all the camper parts (stove, fridge, etc. are functioning) and not looking to part things out at this moment or hive off parts just yet.

Any more thoughts from the peanut gallery in regards to value?

Thanks in advance.

1) The sills and rockers look smoked
2) The floors - I have no idea what is hiding under all that thick asphalt top coating on the inside. Maybe rusty
3) Rust on the back shelf and in the rear seat area?
4) Motor is probably more reliable than the original which is nice.

I have a '75 Targa that has no rust. The floors, sills, rockers, etc. are mint.

The paint is shot on mine, and has a 2.7

I think mine is worth $15K (and it even has the hard top Targa as yours).

People are paying ridiculous prices for rust bucket projects. I would gather to say yours is worth $10-$15K to the right person. It needs rust repair, but so many do.

A very nice example of yours (a '75 Targa) went on BaT months ago at $26K. It would cost more to restore yours to the level this car was at, effectively making your car not even worth $10K. Parted it would be worth more.

You should take look at engine number it look like 2.2 E engine at least head start 621xxxx.that woud add $$$

Jrboulder 07-23-2017 03:48 PM

I think you could get 13-15k for it pretty easily. Would it be a smart buy at 15k? Nope, but I think someone who can't get into a 25k 911 would be excited to buy it.

Sal, Pors + Jr, thanks for your posts and insights regarding the Targa. I really appreciate it.

And thumbs up to Pors1968 for the good eye. The engine is indeed a 2.2 E powerplant. Not sure how that impacts value as I've really only looking for bastardized rusty POS's middies for comparison, and not so much at individual part values as I'm not contemplating a part-out at this time or really even in the future. But obviously if that motor could be matched with the original chassis, there's some real value for someone there. I may post the 621XXXX motor up on the Early S registry lost and found thread.

Anyone else want to chime in on this funky, rusty piece of joy?

Tom, what's the rust situation on the floor (under the coating), the rear seat area, the rear deck, and the rest? Was it stored outside or inside?

Mine was in the desert (ie no rain), was inside in California in a garage, then outside at my current place. Since it's been outside for a month it doesn't do well to keep the rain out. I removed the asphalt covering inside to find mint floors - but I removed ALL the rear stuff under the seats and rear shelf (as you know it's pretty much huge sponges under heavy heavy rubber mats and such - and it was very nice under there SINCE it was in the desert, but I don't think it would have lasted a year here (north of Chicago) in this weather. It would have filled up and rusted bigtime.

Since I stripped the interior it's going inside the garage to stay this weekend.

Its important to see these areas. I had a '74 that had the floor intact ONLY because of the asphalt factory covering. When I removed this, there was no floor. Seriously. I sold the car.

It's important to see these areas because they might not even be there. I'm concerned about your rocker rust - so it tells me there is more - and I hate rust (that's why I got the car I have now).

Would you sell those hard oil lines. I need a set for my 74' so it can stay on the road. Send a PM if you would like me to contribute to your abroad home?

It was happenstance. I clicked the thread because of the 901 gears and saw the hardlines and remembered reading the question here.

Nice!

Bump. I’m adopting this thread, gonna make it like Toby’s outlaw thread. I bought the car and thread rights came with it. Haha.

What made me want to post is this:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/980577-1974-porsche-911s.html

This is exactly what Tom’s car was. I’ll never return it to that. But I’m gonna rip it apart first. Winter goal is replace the 2.2 with an SC engine and gearbox then it needs the heat restored. Drove it home at night when it was 25 out. I was dressed like a skier but still couldn’t feel my hands and feet for about 2 hours after the 1 hour drive from Boulder.
