If you were Porscheless...

Would you buy a classic 911 in todays market?

Even if I had more money to spend, I probably would not - Hence the 944 in my garage.

P.s. I know I sound like PushingMyLuck version 2.0. Not having an old 911 does that to a man :)

It has nothing to do with jealousy. Really it hasn't. Cross my heart!

SalParadise 07-20-2017 09:12 AM

No, I would not buy a classic aircooled in today's market.

I would do what you did - but probably have a 928. But before I did this I would purchase a 996 Carrera 4 or Cayman. Those are the two I would purchase if I was going in now.

Matt Monson 07-20-2017 09:33 AM

I would buy a driver SC. I don't think longhoods or 3.2s are a good value currently.

Tarek307 07-20-2017 09:58 AM

996 2002.2004 all the way- Best value for your buck, not sure that will last long as people are realizing how much car they get for so little..just budget 2k for IMS/Clutch for peace of mind.

**** yeah. I bought at the peak of the peak with some added premium on top. Oh well, win some lose some.

If I could spare the money I'd add a second air cooled. I'd buy a middie coupe roller and build a narrow body sleeper hot rod, and I'd paint it Irish Green.

There's a 75 in StL that might be for sale.

I would probably try to buy an unloved hotrod version. Maybe a modded to hell 930 with a color change or a something LS swapped. Something that would be tons of fun but mostly immune to the envy of collectors.

nathanbs 07-20-2017 10:52 AM

I have bought 7 middies in this market(last 10 months) as I see them as still undervalued regardless of their increases in the last several years. Its disproportionate to cars on both side of them age wise and there is nothing wrong them. They are actually my favorite all time 911 design. I think enough other people in the world agree with me in that sentiment for it to be a safe purchase.

christiandk 07-20-2017 11:04 AM

I am considering an early 996 in a cool color - I used to hate it, but actually it drives like a real 911. GR with black leather would be nice.

You forget he had the 912e already.

Cayman?

Rawknees'Turbo 07-20-2017 01:09 PM

Chris, there are two options in the Porsche world - widebodied rear booster or your feet (Porsche sneakers?!?!); everything else is a compromise not befitting a real man, such as yourself (the Dangling Dane), bro!!!

Same boat...... Can't stop thinking that these cars trade at crazy numbers. While I am tempted by a $70,000 996 GT3; I believe a $175,000 70S is irrational.

$185,000 to $200,000 gets a mint 430 Ferrari Scuderia..... much more tempting to me.

I consider $50-60k 70-73 T's totally irrational too. For that money I would rather have a Cayman S or 996 turbo.

ficke 07-20-2017 01:27 PM

If I did not have my Porsches, I would buy an early 70' or late 60's Alfa of some sort, GTV, Alfetta, Giulia, etc. not a spyder. They are the closest to these air cooled Porches for driving fun that I have experienced and can be still had for normal money.

Alan A 07-20-2017 01:48 PM

I have a modded to hell something else that's old so I'd have to go with something modern.
Or a 930 slant nose.

they shouldn't be compared as they are not anything close to the same. Do you compare the Scuderia to a 70's Ferrari Dino for $450,000? Two totally different horses that you are shopping for and/or looking at. Ones a 47 year old classic collector car the other two are less than 20 years old

Let's say I lost my 911 sc- poof it's gone. And les say I was given $30k cash for it.
I thing a 2006-08 cayman s would be the ticket, or I would save another 10-15k and get a 996 turbo

I dont know why but I cant look at a Cayman like an aircooled 911 or even like its a 911 its more on par with a 914 I suppose. Are we talking for cool factor? track handling? What is your objective(s)? Again two completely different animals
