914-6 Market?

Hello, longtime lurker and Porsche fan, mainly 911’s … but opportunity knocks...Pseudo Barn-find

1970 Porsche 914 | eBay

Is it me or are 914-6 bring that kind of money? IMHO, it seems like this car will need major metal work to repair the rust issues you can see in the pictures, and what these cars are known for.

Any thoughts?

I have the opportunity to pick up a car (914-6) in need of less rust repair, minor hell-hole issues and full drivers longitude; complete car with the exception of the velour interior, sitting for 3 years in the SW sun with 75K miles on the odometer.

Thanks

No need for sarcasm… I completely understand the market has jumped, and Hagerty values are from $30-100k, plus a Concours car sold at Russo for $99k six months ago.
Porsche Excellence Buyers Guide 2017/18 has an average car “in need of NO repairs” at $60k. So the ebay car is better than a #4 Hagerty car?
IMHO the eBay car needs at $15k to $20K in metal and paint work …
Hence my query to the forum…

I sold mine about 10 years ago, it was a hellbox, I got $8000 and was jumping up and down, I had only paid $3500 a few years before. Who knew?

But yes, prices have sky-rocketed, even for the converted 914-4's. I know, I needed a conversion for my 904 project, even those are over $30,000 now.

That car is "condition 1" compared to the other Flintstone specials they usually sell.

They did originally. Contrary to what the seller is stating, those wheels are not original to that car. They obviously aren't real bright. Wheels made in October of 1970 could not have ever gone on a 1970 model car.

I belong to a couple 914 FB groups. Last night some guy posted a WTB looking for a very nice driver 73 or 74 2.0 appearance group car for $25k or less. He also added at the end he would consider nice 6 conversions at that price. I thought to myself,"good luck"...

C'mon Adam - you serious? I have been into Porsche cars since I was 5 (my first was a '73 1,7 914) in 1984...and I've kept an eye out and in my entire life I've only seen 5 real 914-6s. They were rare (then) and will always be so. Probably the VIN plate is now worth what you sold. I like the hellbox description though...very true, but man, I have always really thought a real 914-6 was a very real and very raw Porsche...

I've owned two 914-6s. Had a chance to buy a 916.

Probably more common in CA.

Hard to find anything better on track.

Man, it hurt to sell it, but I had come to a Porsche cross-roads. I was at a Porsche 356 Registry Holiday and everyone kept asking where my car was, I had arrived in a Honda CRV. I looked up and had three project Porsches, a 60 B Roadster, a 63 B Coupe, and this 914-6, all that needed everything. All very cool, but years from driving. I thought, this is stupid, I'm surrounded by Porsches but can't even drive one to a holiday, or to the corner store. So I traded my roadster and a 73 911S we had for my driver roadster, but in order to pay for the S I sold the 914-6. A sacrifice had to be made. Do I regret it, no, do I miss the six, yes. You can read the whole story here, it was in ESSES several years ago.

I couldn't agree more about how original 6's have escalated in value over the past few years, which is why this one looks like a really great value at $62k if it truly is as clean as it appears:

Only 4 bidders above $15,000 and I am not one of them because I too exit the entire 914-4, -6 market at $25,000 and enter the 911 market.

Ebay Update… 28 bids, winning bid $45,000.
Still scratching my head on this one...I guess I am just being a pessimist

i picked up a converted 914-4 last year with a 3.6 and all the GT treatment.

it's just stupid, such a riot to drive.

i love my 911's, but a properly built 914-6 really is something...

I have to agree

I built a 6 conversion from a 73 1.7. It is now a 2.7RS spec car with suspension and brake upgrades and it is just wild.

I have restored 356'S, owned a 67 911S, 88 Carrara and a 87 930. This car is by far the most raw and fun to drive, is magically balanced, and is much rarer on the road than a 911.

I am having a hard time justifying 911 prices these days.

I love this car.
