911 in Japan
Hello all, I know a similar thread to this was posted not too long ago, but I was hoping to get some advice on a 1987 911 with a little under 54,000 miles. They're asking about $54,000.
I originally thought the car was a factory Turbo Look Body, but have since found out that the turbo fenders and tail are aftermarket installs. I'm not sure if they used factory or aftermarket parts. I've also been told the car was repainted in its original color after the modifications were completed. I don't know if the rest of the car was taken down to bare metal prior to painting. I'm also not sure what the reasons were for the modifications were or if the car was in an accident. The dealer also mentioned that the brakes and engine have been recently serviced, but did not provide much detail into what exactly was done. As this would be my first 911 purchase I'm just looking for some advice on the price of the car and if there's anything I specific I should be looking for on a car that has been modified like this one. I'm also curious if anyone might know of a good shop in Japan that could do a PPI. Thank you all for your time and responses. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

There are a few people on Pelican from or living in Japan. I recall the green RWB backdate guy posts here quite a bit. Point is, they might be able to give you a better estimate on price. To me it's high, but I know everything in Japan is pricier, especially classic 911's. When I was there, I thought consumer electronics would be cheaper, but most of them were 20% more, than what I would have paid retail at home.
Given it's a dealer, you would expect some mark-up for the pleasure? of doing business at a dealer. Is it an SC that's been modded? Or a Carrera? How many miles? Numbers matching engine and trans? Lap welded or butt welded flares? Fiberglass or metal flares? Any of the suspension gone through? What does the motor look like and how many miles? The interior looks really clean. Didn't japan cars come with the Euro bumpers? The reason I ask is someone has converted this car to Euro bumperettes and plugging the US bumper holes in the back. Did you test drive it?

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to most of your questions. I'm currently deployed right now for the next few months so I've been unable to see the car in person.
I'm told that the engine and transmission are both original, but have been unable to confirm that they are indeed matching numbers that came with the car. The dealer mentioned the engine has recently been overhauled, but I haven't been able to get any details regarding what was actually done. The car has a little under 54,000 miles on it. I'm also trying to confirm if the body mods are metal or fiberglass. As I can't even find out what type of maintenance has been done to the engine I'm guessing it'll be next to impossible to find out what kind of welds were used. I'm guessing butt welds would be better than lap? How could I tell if its an SC or a Carrera? I was under the impression everything from 84-89 was a Carrera. Thanks again for your response. |

It looks like a 87-89 Carrera. With all these unanswered questions and your limited knowledge I would find another car.
Good luck! |
