1971 911T Hotrod/Outlaw

Hello, I am looking for a bit of advice, as I have come across what could be a great opportunity for me, but I don't know much about longhoods so I have come to seek input. Condition of the car (1971 911T) is pretty rough, but is a daily driver with 350k miles on the clock. Paint is toast...including the wheels, but there is little rust and the car is in good mechanical shape. There has been one rebuild around the 150k mark, so another may be in order sooner rather than later. I do not have the slightest idea as to what a fair price would be on this, nor do I know what it would take to make a decent outlaw out of this, or if it is worth it. My thoughts, at a glance are that the car is worth 25k give or take as she sits...but don't want to offend the owner with an offer. Interior is rough as well, but not destroyed.

If I had to explain what I would like out of the car it would be fairly simple... it would be driver, not looking for a 4.0 monster show car, but would like a decent suspension setup with a decent amount of horsepower, nothing crazy, but I am totally up for suggestions/input.

Thanks in advance for any positive input.

Having tried entering the porsche world via a project car I'd say you ought to pass on his and find what you really want. You'll spend less in the end and have more time behind he wheel than under the damn thing. They all have issues and need some tlc in places so if you want to tinker, worry not you'll get your chance.

Its hard to guess at value without seeing one photo. 25 is more than I'd offer for the car you describe, but I'm anchored at old prices when a car like this was 7-10k.

Assume you buy it for 25k and it needs at 12k engine rebuild, and 5k of interior, and 10k in paint work. Well damn we're over 50k and you haven't touched a 350k transmission or suspension. Not to mention that it will take you 3 years of not driving to get to this point. I'm probably being conservative on both cost and time.

If what you want is a long term project that will cost a lot, then this might be something for you to pursue. Certainly there are people, and you may be one of them, that have the talent, money, and time to restore this project. If that's you and a project is what you want then a 71t might be the perfect platform. From your description though it sounds like you want something to drive not a project.

Sorry I'm not more help on pricing. I think the lack of photos is what's causing the limited number of guesses.

By the way you know you named yourself after the family dog?

Cheers
Rich

That is from an independent shop. To the original OP, you'll probably be wanting to do a lot of the work yourself. if you're paying independent shops to do the work it simply won't be worth it. You could probably wait and find an outlaw that's already complete and be ahead.
If you're one of those guys like me that has done and can do just about anything to a car then go for it. 25k is a good price for a running and driving longhood if it doesn't have a bunch of rust.

I should add that you need to enjoy rebuilding a car. The people who don't enjoy it but just want the finished product usually don't finish the cars.

Thanks gents, I will not be wrenching too much, but I will certainly be involved. Wont touch paint, and likely wont touch much motor stuff as I may just buy a 2.7 or 3.2 for a drop in. I will tackle interior, suspension, brakes though. With that being said, I know it will be cheaper to go for a well sorted/built car, as opposed to building...but if I build it I can pace myself and feel the differences as they occur. As weird as this sounds, I would almost prefer to spend a little more in the long run as dropping 80-100k at once probably won't happen. What can I find a decent outlaw for these days since comps are fairly limited...from my understanding the market has softened/leveled off a bit. I don't need a all out concours quality build. The setup I have in mind is ~2200lbs, decent interior, decent exterior...I am okay with character! I think 200-250hp is more than enough for me in that car.
