I need someone to pick this car apart for me... 911SC value check
Hey savy pelicans.
I thought this would be the best place to post the question... Is this car the real deal and is it worth the premium? if not what is it worth? 1978 Used Porsche 911SC at North Shore Autosport Serving Chicago, IL, IID 16760646 I have always been a 3.2 Carerra guy but this color combo has struck me. Seller is also claiming 20k of maintenance in the past 4 years. (Which I am waiting on the records for now) Has anyone had any experience with this seller and does anything look "off" about the car? Many thanks in advance. |

I forgot to mention the rear windows were converted to pop-outs, but the original glass is available.

Beautiful looking car but I don't think any SC is worth almost $53k. I'd also be interested to see why a car with only 65k needed $20k in recent repairs. I feel like the synchros shouldn't have needed to be replaced in a well cared for car with that little mileage(though I'm no expert), maybe the odometer wasn't working for a few years.

I had not looked at the pictures before that post. While I also have trouble stomaching a $50k SC I think they will get close to their ask. That's a very nice car in one of my favorite colors. I believe the mileage.

Ummm.. Is that paint on the edge of the rubber? Little things like this set off alarm bells in my head.

Well you asked for opinions so here are mine.
1) Anyone paying that kind of money for an SC needs their head examined. 2) It appears to me that the car has spent a lot of time outside. Take a look at how faded all the black anodized trim is. The amount of fading on the trim would result in me taking a hard look to see what truly is original on the car. Typically that sort of thing wouldn't matter if the car presents well but in this instance you are paying a large premium for the claim that it is an original car. I'm not expert on early SCs by any stretch, but did the factory really put clear anodized trim on the front windshield and black anodized trim everywhere else? The sunvisors also appear to be also incorrect, later all black versions as with a white headliner, I think they should be the same as earlier cars with the exposed side of the visors in white vinyl. I'd definitely want an original paint car at that price and the painted seal sc_rufctr points out is a warning sign. It's also odd that some photos show fixed quarter windows when it's claimed to have pop-outs (apparently bright anodized while the rest of the side trim is faded black anodizing). Sloppy cosmetics for a car priced as a #1.
Edit: While I was typing this, Todd covered some of these points. I have seen anodizing fade even when cars have limited sun exposure, but this one needs to decide if it's bright trim or black anodized. And fixing that ain't cheap.

Thanks for the looks guys. I was going to send an offer in the mid 40s if it was all original or could be put back to original.
The paint photo above and the discussion about the car sitting outside prolonged causes me to reconsider, plus I have not seen the records yet. The fact that the dash is not cracked makes me wonder if its just age or it did spend time outside. |

A well restored sc with totally rebuilt and improved engine, rebuilt transmission, paint, interior, suspension, wheels and the rest is well worth $50 all day long, and then some. Try to do it for less on a one owner quality car as a starting point. You'd be basically driving a brand new old car when you're done.
I'm not comparing them to other 911s, just saying. This one, not so much. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk

The door locks look very bent for a low mileage car.
Exhaust bypass pipe and bolts painted silver - at this price not acceptable Exhaust tip scraped / bent - |
