what is smog exempt worth?
being in a smog county in California it means the world to me. I know my state has the worst smog laws going, but I'm also some what aware of other states globbing on to our state smog requirements. funy thing is rural CA counties are exempt!!
it's not just older cars, but as I understand it "tunes" of contemporary cars & diesel trucks can be detected. what do other states require? here in CA 75 & older are exempt, new cars don't have to be smog tested until they're are 7+ years old. even my diesel truck has to smogged every two years and it's the last of the non horse piss additive models. I hate my state. what are smog laws in you all states? if stringent how much of a percentage might you deduct, or consider adding cost wise for smog exemptmenship....? it means the world to me. |
I'm in downstate NY so we get emissions as well as safety.
You can register a car over 25 as a historic, which limits use but makes it a safety only inspection (brakes, lights, horn, wipers). With that what you do to it is between you and your insurance company. That's how my 68 LBC ended up with a 6.0 and is insured and 100% road legal. |
A friend of mine wrote a law here in AZ. to try and get a "collector cars" smog exemption. but by the time the law finally went threw he had already sold his 67S that got him to write the law to his son in So Cal. where it was exempt from smog tests.
California had much easier smog laws than AZ. for old cars, none, and we had to pass smog test. Now here in AZ you do not have to pass a smog tests for "collector" cars, thanks to Paul G. so fed up trying to register his 67S Porsche. I and many other people now use his law here in AZ. |

Colorado has mirrored CA standards for over a decade so it matters to me. I think my signature suggests how I feel about it. I actually have a spare stock engine for my Subaru that I used to install every two years for smog tests. For many years I was still legal because even with 50whp over stock it tested clean with a metal cat. Then they tightened things a bit and I was sol.
I would say because CA is such a large and dominant market that it single handedly drives up the prices of 74-75 about 10% or so. |

No smog testing in Kansas. 74-75 premium makes no difference to me so I run a 77 911S with SSIs and magnaflow muffler, which makes the 2.7 sound awesome.
I hope that smog laws are on borrowed time. Even 10-15 year old cars run so clean. In the next ten years, most cars will be hybrid or electric anyways. |

Colorado enacted something similar after they stopped the 25 year rolling rule. They locked smog exempt at 75, but you can get collector plates at 25 years. With collector playesyou still get emissions but only every 5 years and no annual registration fees. I would even consider an SC under those rules.

Wisconsin doesn't tests cars that don't have OBDII connections, or trucks registered for commercial use...

Does not answer the question...... I have never seen any documented correlation of increased value related to a cars ability to pass smog..... but many ads call it out......

I do not know how you can document the smog exempt advantage or really quantify it?
But it has to exsist to those who it would make life easier, states like Cal. or Colorado, etc. but also a whole lot states it makes no difference between a 75 and 76 car like AZ. NY, Iowa, etc. You should mention it of course in the ads. There would be no difference in price in most states but they should be able to ignore that comment if it does not pertain to them. |

California is 10% of the population and a much higher percent of the domestic AC 911 market. I have no doubts it influences the pricing nationally.
