915 trans value question
 

I own a solid 915 transmission from a 86 3.2. Came from a car that is becoming an outlaw, I have since acquired a G50 to install in car. When I acquired the car it drove well and shifted well.

I had an associate who stated he was going to purchase it 2 years ago from me but has just recently backed out.

What is the value of this transmission without lsd?
I was told the trans had lsd. If it does have lsd now what is it worth ?

If one I inspect it more it looks like it needs a rebuild what is it worth as a core?

I want to understand it's value before I decide on keeping or selling. I own two cars that I can use this trans in as a back up so future is unclear.

I know folks will ask for a picture but it is stored in a mechanics shop for 2 years- I don't have any handy.

Several years ago I picked up 2 “spare” 915’s because they were cheap and I thought I could rebuild one and have it ready to go as I continued to drive my high mile SC with a stubborn to shift 2nd and a whining 4th. I also thought they were really undervalued and would someday be worth a bit more (I think I paid $500 and $700 for my 2 spares). I wish I had bought a core 3.0 when they were $2k!

Like most things Porsche, used 915’s in good condition are worth a bit more these days. I think a known good used 915 with no issues is probably worth at least $2500.00, and I think the late 915’s like your ‘86 used the beefy (and sought after) 108mm (versus 100mm) stub axles add $500. “Core” unknown 915’s seem to bring around $1500 these days, probably worth that just for the case and parts. Add $1k for a good LSD.

Rebuilding a 915 by a reputable shop is expensive these days, a combination of escalating parts costs (check out the thread on 915 bearing costs) and labor. I finally rebuilt my ‘77 mag cased 915 and I think I have $10k total in that rascal. I did have close ratio 2nd thru 5th gears installed as well a Wavetrac diff which inflated the cost. There is no way I could sell it and recoup my cost.

I currently see 915’s being hard sells (even with a documented fresh rebuild) at $5k up. I would be mindful of a rebuild with the intent on reselling the box, unless you have free labor and replace minimal parts, it could be a money losing proposition.

If I had a nice shifting 915 with no issues (and 108mm stub axles like yours) I would try to get $3500.

$2500. $3000 if the stubs are included. Another $1000 for an lsd if it tests good. If it’s out of spec then it only adds $500.
