Just keep in mind the bump a 72 gets for the oil filler door. And 915 gearbox. And 2.4l Mind you it has neither of those things with it, but my point is that 72s aren't a great comp on where to sell a 71. 69-71 is what you mostly want to watch for comparisons.

Me too, although mine is a matching numbers 72 with a color change from silver to black like the example above.
Mine runs ands drives though.

And that $15k is if you just go "good used", which is always a crap shoot. Put together a freshly built 2.4l T spec motor on MFI and you're at $25-30k easily on just the engine.

Window frames: $2000
Door pockets: $2000
Dash pad: $2000
Reupholster both seats: $2000
All the stuff you don't see: $4000
then normal maintenance stuff: brakes, shocks, tie rod ends.
...and you're living with the paint job, which looks good in pictures, but most do.

add about 300 hours of your time at $0.60 per hour...

^^^ Yep. This is for the guys like me that spend 2hrs a night, every night, working on a project.
I would plan on $50k to finish it. You will have a fun project and save maybe 15% .

IMHO, it doesn't make sense to restore something like this. Perfect candidate to 'hot-rod' as it will likely never be matching numbers so just have fun with it and create something interesting.

This car is gonna sell to someone who is going to ship it off somewhere and checkbook it. Someone like that will spend more for the project than any diy ever will. It’s not going to end up with an average bird board customer unless he already has all the stuff to finish it out in the barn.

The one part of this that people always forget is there is a huge section of the stands of Porschephiles who don't have $50,000-75,000 to spend on a restored or nice driver 72 911. But they do have $15,000-20,000, lots of ambition, some free time, and a decent income to finance part of the restoration over time, while doing a lot of the work themselves, General Contracting as it were. They aren't keeping a tally of how much they are spending and they might end up right-side up or maybe upside down, but they get the car they want, and it's their sweat and blood in it, making it mean something. Just remember, not everyone is "investing", not everyone can afford a done car, and not everyone is keeping a spread-sheet of how much they are spending, but that doesn't make them any less of a Porsche guy.
