Well Bought or Sucker?

As a frequent contributor I figured I would throw myself to the wolfs and see what your thoughts are on my recent purchase.

have been looking for a 74 or 75 to build a light weight hot rod for a little over a year. The car Jim Tweet built really spoke to me and I started looking more frequently. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/969648-fs-nj-1979sc-911r-rgruppe-hotrod.html
Some of you know finding a rust free 74 or 75 is like finding Gold. You see it done on TV, but call BS. It's dam near impossible.
I was watching a car posted on CL and here and made an offer of $25k early on that was refused. I waited and waited and the car went on ebay. It stalled at $21.5k. I was going to throw in a $25k last second bid, in genuine ebay style, to see what happened. During lunch telling a friend I pulled up the add and the owner, ahemm, Flipper dropped the Buy it Now to $26k. I thought about it for a couple minuets and clicked the button.

Now Randy is a Flipper, but it's his hobby. He has a connection that calls him with cars. He has a great shop with lifts and checks the cars out. He just doesn't bother with changing the title or messing with that side. I was handed the title from AZ with the PO's signature and everything needed to get it registered. I kina like it because he would have paid $1,100 in taxes and registration and a couple mots later I would have paid the same money to our cash grabbing/wasting state. I would have never found a decent 74 without his connection and hobby.

The good things are it's a never wrecked, rust free, emissions exempt, 3.0 swapped 1974. It has a recent RetroAir system that I can sell. Good interior and body panels that I can sell.

The bad things are the 3.0 is a 930/16 small port that probably has broken studs, won't run cold and runs on 5 cylinders.

So is $26k for a rust free car that needs paint, engine work and probably several other things a good buy in todays market.

Here are the links to the ebay photos. I can't download their pictures. And the vin number in the add is not the correct vin. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1974-Porsche-911-/263434055547?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STR K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=949FAqmpLPcpdg3UTJ78%2 52BgLYxHY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I don’t do black but if it works for you, cool. Black in 74 is kind of rare I think you did fine. If you get the retro air off quickly pm me before you list it. One thing I need to do to my 86 before I deliver it is upgrade the AC.

My feeling as a '75 owner, and when I bought mine six years ago it was considered the least desirable year 911, it's nice to see these rookie card cars bringing what they deserve.

With that said I think it's a fair price. If it's truly rust free as you say I'd say it's a great price.

A '74 is going to be more and more desirable as the years go on. Much more so than any SC or 3.2. Never used to be like this but the tables have turned. As I have said there are only a handful of '74s or '75s for sale in the entire world in any one month so that tells you the rarity.

I think it's a good buy that will only reward you - and 10 years from now you will be really thanking yourself.

Well Bought or Sucker?

Not aMM motor. I have the salvage yard receipt.

I don’t like black either. My build will be Albert Blue, Ultra Blue, Aga Blue. Something dark without a purple tint. I’ll pm about the AC.

The salvage can’t be from a wreck. There are no damaged or replaced panels in the tub that I can find. With the salvage yard receipts for the engine and transmission I’d say it’s a stolen recovery. Either way one more reason it’s a good car to molest without guilt.

He had 5 Porsches and one Jaguar there for flipping.

Yea, I’ll find out eventually if there is rust hiding.

$26 for a car that needs a motor rebuild, might be a bit high.

By the way....the way he is flipping, not paying tax, etc...is not legal.

Broken studs really only reauire a top end job. But i think D wants to build an engine. Don't we all? Got my mfi in the mail yesterday.

Title jumping is illegal in most states. Opening up a lot of problems down the road by doing this.

I paid 4k more for a 75 that after a year plus of crawling around it is rust free as advertised sans a headlight bucket. what sal says above is what my consideration was with a ton of new parts previously documented here on my car with what turned out to be a junk motor. I knew the motor needed attention, though I did not know how bad the motor was. having a smog exempt, (CA registered) sound body, slick lid 75 was too good to pass up on at the time and I'm still thrilled to have it everyday.

ive got more into it than it's likely worth, but time will tell, per Sal

If you build it they will come. Give it another 3-5 years and a well sorted well cared for emissions free hot rod will be worth plenty.

So I guess you have your answer....it's neither well-bought, nor sucker..... You're happy with the car and price, and that is all that matters. Enjoy. I love my '75.

The stigma of a salvage title will always hold the value down.

That is not holding true with 356 and eatly 911. The older they get the more current condition on the day it sells matters. Plus for us hot rodders we arent building value. We are generally building for pleasure and ROI is based on smiles per mile.

You have a 70S that rotted in a field for 20 years. It got $40k of rust repair and is now perfect. You've got an identical rust free salvage title theft recovery that has never been hit. Both car have just had a bare metal respray in original color. Which chassis do you prefer? For me the all original theft wins.

40 p-cars on pelican parts alone in the past 2 years.

Good luck to you on your current purchase. What do you mean the VIN doesn't match on ebay ?

Probably trying to hide the VIN so whoever search for it (previous owner, new owners later on) it won't get back to him as the seller.
