If you get a Boxster and learn to drive it through PCA DEs there are always spec boxsters for rent at race weekends. You just need to hook up with a shop that is racing them, like Chris Cervelli.

That said I think it wise to step back and reassess what you really want. My 75 runs and drives and I paid less than 15k quite recently. I can get in it right now and drive to the store. It needs $25k of paint and rust repair I don’t have the skills to do. I’m into my high mileage Cayman for about the same. It needs nothing. I personally subscribe to Wayner’s Two car approach. I just have a lost puppy problem and have more than 1 project.

"Lost puppy syndrom"

I like that. I finally have a daignosis and a reason that vehicles keep finding their way to me instead of the pound. :D

$5000
But like a high stakes poker game, that was just the buy-in.

I once owned 9 Porsches with only 1 running. Now I own 6 with 2.5 running.

I think getting a true project is a big step to take with a car you have no experience with. It seems the wiser path is to get a decent one first. Once you know how a car is supposed to be, you have more of a foundation to be able to restore one. All these cars are old, and will require some tinkering.

It seems you need to determine just how much project you are interested in.

Adam, I may have to do a site visit and see what follows me home...

Inventory doesn't count. I was still at Carquip back then and had about the same number of cars in the yard too. :D

I started with a roller that was rust free but had sat for at least 10 years. I am in about 20k not including the engine and trans that I inherited. The car still needs paint...

That dollar amount includes a few mistakes and quite a few hot rod bits that werent necessary but I got bitten by the bug. One huge thing is that the cost of parts has increased dramatically in the last couple years. The oil cooler bracket was $100 when I bought it in 2016 and its now close to $150. Buy now or be priced out forever as they say ;)

To the OP:

You are smack dab in the middle of Porsche Central, USA. Go to some RMR-PCA monthly socials and talk with folks. Get a lot more knowledge. A project Porsche is no baptism for a newbie. My third Porsche was an $18K ebay purchase, four years ago. I knew I was getting into a total restoration. My total investment is now ~$60K, with easily another $20K and six months yet to go.
