Interested in this car, but should I be?
I’m in the market for a 911 turbo and this car has intrigued me. I’m hoping to get the assistance of the community to asses this car.
1976 Porsche 911 Turbo 930 Turbo | Longwood, FL | Millenia Motors I live in another state from where this car is listed, so if this car clears the hurdles required to buy then I’d be buying it without the ability to see it or drive it. With that said, I’m also looking for assistance with the following: Any known reputable shops in this area of FL Any members that can check out the car and post feedback/impressions Thanks in advanced for whatever assistance is provided. |
It's a cool Hot Rod. It may be a little high on the price, but I'm sure it would cost more than $100k to replicate.
The biggest question is do you have a way around emissions testing? |
Have you looked at this one? It's in your neighborhood.... and a very reputable shop....

That black one has been for sale for a long time.

Matt, I know there are people that do things to avoid smog but it can be dicy and BAR puts energy into going after shops that do illegal things AND sometimes burns owners of vehicles that play games. It's nuts they make something this old have to smog stricter than new car standards but they do just that.
You want a car that can legally smog and I think it's crazy to buy a modded out of state car. If you have a GOOD Porsche mechanic- who specifically KNOWS 930s tak to him. Just because someone knows 911s well doesn't mean they know that much about 930s, which can be tricky in their own way. Let's back up. You are interested in a 930. What do you want to do with it? Are you thinking "collector" garage queen that is pristine, a fast fun thrill ride, or somewhere in between? Do you have a specific year you want? Is it just a 930 you want? By that I mean, a 911 instead or a late H20 turbo as an alternative? All this matters. Whatever you do, be careful. Buying a 930 is complex enough but buying one out of state WITHOUT even seeing it is telling me you have huge piles of cash and a great mechanic who is going to send his kids through college on your car. BTW you probably know the market is cooling so the more advice you can get from especially long term 930 guys the better off you will be. My first 930 was almost a hot rod. Instead I listened to my brother and bought a pristine stock 930. When the day came I sold it I was so glad I listened to him. I had had a few since and all hot rods. Fantastic cars but expensive to mod correctly and can be smog hell here in CA. GL |

that car does have the eye appeal that would be all newport beach! it seems like a well dressed up 930, but CA smog laws will crush if at all modified.
ive heard that the smog year limit will move to the 86+ model years after passing one last sniffer tests, but as I also understand it you will still be required to pass a visual every two years. that car needs a Nevada plate. |
Colorado has gone to a similar rolling rule. They still lock smog free at 75, but anything 25 or older can get collector plates and 6 years between tests. It’s why I’ve become open to an SC targa. I have a spare stock 83 engine.

just looked over the entire add and I was right... that thing needs a silver state license plate...
very, very cool car. dare I say??? OUTLAW? middie militia? have good insurance & don't park it in any one place unattended too long... |

The more I look at this car the more I like it. The only thing I don't like are the door release straps. The Red RS style pulls are so much cleaner.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518277080.jpg But keeping the periscope headlight washers with the IROC bumper. That's too cool. I know; not for everyone. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1518277205.jpg |
It’s a great car. The only thing I would change is the red centerlocks.
|
If it was a NA hotrod it would almost 2X the price. I think it's a killer car!

Re: Millenia Motors, I visited them in roughly mid-2016 to check out a 991.1 they had. It's a father and son shop and they were both pretty friendly and knowledgeable. Very into Porsches. They had a few other cars, but mainly 911s including a full blown race 911 in a trailer that the father previously used for competition. Seemed like they got most of their cars from auctions in other states. The 991.1 that I was looking at had a very small amount of corrosion, probably not a big deal at all. I asked where they got it and apparently it came from New York. They also had a new GT4 which they were trying to sell for ~$15k over MSRP.
Anyway, nice enough guys and seemed like they knew their stuff. Can't exactly vouch for their trustworthiness, but at least I can say they are live human beings who are experienced with Porsche and who have had a brick & mortar location for at least a couple years. I'm not in the Orlando area, but I can ask some friends for a recommended P-car shop there if you are going to do a PPI. Let me know if you want me to ask. |
One of the nicest 930 outlaws I have ever seen.

Doesn't appear to be sold. Still available. I'm not super knowledgable on 930s, but it looks like a much better car than the black one in the original post. https://autokennel.com/1979-porsche-930-911-turbo-coupe-2/ |

my car came with those and I hate them. mine does not even have the handle, but another leather piece. new riders in the car either cant figure out how to get out, or worse use that strap to close the door while seated. at some point when I'm looking for a quick project I plan on swapping in red nylon pulls made from harbor freight ratchet tie downs. have a seamstress that has sewn a set up previously that I used in the racecar. |
