Valuation on '87 G50 Targa

There is snow outside but I plan on putting my '87 on the market in a month or so.

I haven't put very much miles on the car since I purchased it but I've really enjoyed the aircooled 911 experience.

1987 Guards Red G50 Targa with 65K miles and change.
Original paint in very good condition, no accidents or damages.
Good documentation and receipts. COA.
A/C blows warm and cruise control doesn't work.

You guys are always looking only for bargains so I'm going to try selling on the Northeast local market first - probably on craigslist.

These are older pictures but are a good indication of current condition.

So what do you think the market will bear in the Northeast (not necessarily asking what you would pay)?

More. A g50 Carrera with that kind of mileage? $45-50k. List it in Pano, the Pca mag.

I'm in the NE too. The market for clean G50's is strong.

Put all you docs and receipts together. A CL ad goes international. I don't know how that happens, but it does. Last time I was getting responses from some guy in France.

$45K is a good number. You might squeeze more on BaT, maybe over $50K, but the local market will snap that baby up in a heartbeat, especially if she's as clean as you say.

I was a bit surprised by the $40K number even though mine is a Targa. I was thinking in the $46-$48K range due to the Northeast market where all things tend to be more expensive. But owners/sellers are biased so I didn't object.

It is very clean and I've done little updates (headlight relay, fuel filter, front hood prop bar).

The last G50 targa sold on BAT did $35k plus buyers fee with 68k miles on it. It was also Guards Red. I thought that was pretty cheap. I think $39 to $42 is where the market is. I don't think waiting until March ot beyond will make any difference.

I picked up my ‘88 coupe recently. How and where you sell it is a big variable. If prepared well, I believe it is a $50k car. One of the biggest features of my car is that it had a full $26k mechanical refresh less than 10k miles ago. Even at low miles these cars may require big dollars to sort.

So take the guess work out for the real buyer. Make it a no nonsense, no excuse buy. To do this I recommend you provide full provenance, documentation, well organized, full inspection with leak down and compression, head bolts checked, trans/clutch checked, fully serviced brakes, cooling system checked out. Also, confirm original paint, high quality pics, video drive too. Lots to do for strong money. However, if it is as original as you say, and you do the work needed for prep, there will be plenty of buyers at $50k.

You'll get that if the car is super nice and has documentation to prove it. If you want the top range of the market I would fix the AC, cruise control, get the car professionally detailed and pop in a original radio if you don't have it. Also the odometer fix will come up if there are any gaps in the documentation. Best of luck with sale.

By the time you fix the AC and cruise, pop for a major detail and find an original radio you might as well take the $38 to $42k. I haven't seen Targa's going in the upper 40's or over $50k unless they're pretty special low low miles cars. I sold my 88 targa last summer with 72k miles, full docs, in very very nice condition including lots of extras and the original parts. I got near the top of the range I posted.

I think the market has leveled off. 45-44k is a good number.

I'd agree with this. But it looks very clean (for a Connecticut car no less) so I'd up it a couple thousand. Looks almost like a new car. Man, that thing would have been my dream in highschool. Growing up in Fairfield County I would have killed for that car. I was a junior...I wouldn't let it go for less than $45K.

Only advice I would have for you is to clean the engine bay - and clean up that fan.

Definitely detail it. I would recommend what I’m doing with my car, drop the engine, reseal anything leaking and detail it before reinstalling. Would be a good opportunity to do the clutch and clutch release fork update as well.
