How much to pay for a modified SC?
 

I'm kicking around purchasing a modified 1980 SC. It is the funky Weissach colors with black platinum and the tan/red interior. Interior has been reupholstered and is in good shape but man that color scheme doesn't work for me. Mods are in the engine and brakes/wheels otherwise generally stock.

Paint is decent, no major body damage ever just a few nits and nats and minor dings etc. ...a bit of a blemish on the door from mirror clipping garage wall.

It is mechanichally very good, near perfect with low mileage matching number punched out to 3.2ss with PMO 46 carbs, carillo rods built by reputable builder. It runs and sounds great. brembo brakes, working cold a/c. Bright Fikse wheels (not to my liking), gearbox reasonably fresh as well.

Anyone in the gallery have an estimate based on my description. I'd plan on putting a little money into it to make it more to my style and liking but would like to get some feedback on a fair price.

I can't help you with a price but very interested hearing the input from others on this one.

I am someone who sees mods as something that add nothing to value. Mods are expensive, and it looks to me it wasn't cheap to mod the motor like that.

The wheels ding it for me, and to me they would be complete throw-a-ways. Minus $2500 right there.

With that said, I see it as $34.5 K + $3.8K/$4.9K depending on the interior/paint to the value without seeing photographs. A strong running SC would probably bring this money without the mods. My feeling is that you need to find another SC if you really plan on keeping it for the simple fact that you don't like the color combo. It's not like its a rare car - desirable maybe - but not rare.

I think Sal nails the price. $35k but could be much, much more if it pushes someone's buttons. Pix will tell this story.

It is the mods that push the buttons for me. I like a good running motor and I might even add Mod S cams to this one rather than the 964 grind to wake it up even more. I think there is less than 4000 miles on the drivetrain. ...maybe much less.

It is a nice very tight little car and I'd ditch the wheels and probably have to put 17" fuchs and maybe change the interior up a bit.

He wants more than what you all are suggesting. My max has been 35K also. ...would come with original 15x7&8 fuchs.

I'd like to pick it up for low 30s. I'll post some pics later.

Sounds like a $40k car to the right buyers. A documented punched out 3.0l with PMOs is a solid engine.

Good luck getting it for low $30's. As I said, it could bring much, much more to the right guy who likes EVERYTHING he sees and wouldn't change a thing.

I'm at $38.5K +/- $3.6k/$4.7k depending on pictures. :D My honest answer is close to $40k.


If you said the engine had 40k mi on it, I would give the engine no value outside of the car. At 4k mi, that $15-20k expense isn't amortized yet. No, he can't get the cost of the engine build out of it, but he can get half.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have any pics here and none that show the little dings. ...the one by the mirror isn't pretty but it is not a major issue. Some dimpling, wrinkling from the mirror torqueing the door when it hit the garage, I'm not sure how it would be repaired precisely. Lots of rock chips etc but a good driver level exterior with nothing major wrong.

I think to the right buyer it is worth a premium also. That said even though the Weissach is a special edition I don't think it should command a premium unless it is a perfect, clean preserved example. I'd have no problem doing anything to this car to make it a more fun Outlaw/Hotrod which is what appeals to me more than preservation anyway.

I'll post some pics later and wrestle with my wallet a bit more and try to decide what to do.

This would also be a car that I'd probably only keep for about a year while I drive it and work on my other cars

FYI, Hagerty gives a Weissach edition a $1000 value bump over comparable 1980 SC coupes of average condition. The seller may be counting that in where he is at on a number. If it doesn't speak to you, and add value in your eyes, this may not be the right car.

...it is the right car if it is the right money leaving me enough in reserve to tastefully change it. Otherwise I will pass it along.

..it's a color thing... the Weissach cars are a negative for me personally. Not a good color combo, and if the car has been modded, then Weissach doesn't add value to a collector either, most likely.
I'm with the consenus..sounds like a $35-$39k car... you can sell the wheels to buy some Fuchs, so that may be close to a wash.

Weissach does nothing for me either. However this car doesn’t sound beyond restoration. Not a concours guy car, but maybe a cars n coffee guy. I’ve seen a couple threads on RL where guys get Weissach weird about just ok cars.

Well it's mine and in my garage now. It is a nice tight little car. Near mechanically perfect as far as I can tell. Nice fresh motor with performance upgrades (98mm pistons, Carillo rods, Titanium valve train, DC 40 Cams and a set of PMOS) -scoots right along. Car has few rock chips, minor blemish here and there but nothing major. ...the Fikses are great wheels and nice and light but not to my liking. I may put some 17" fuchs and paint them to match the original 15 Weissach fuchs that the car came with ...has big brembo brakes so can't put the 15s back on.

That is a nice little car, you could pull the interior and save it. But in an interior to your taste (black leather seats etc)?

Congrats. Sounds fun. Just don’t get your head stuck in “preserving” it and enjoy the fun and all is right in the world.

Sounds like a real fun car you have there, that is the bottom line with these things and it look like you did well. I think the wild interior will grow on you, that was part of the unique charm with Porsche at that time.
The brakes and engine are a plus to me.

Thanks all. I bought this car to just have a little fun with for a while. I think you are right the interior will grow on me. I think once I lower it just a tad the car may look more "right" to me as well. I'm considering black or anthracite for the wheel centers and seeing how that looks to me.

17" fuchs are not too expensive anyway. ...car came with a set of 16x7&9s fuchs also.
