Where Where did the 2.7 factory replacement engines go?
 

Does anybody know how the factory would have dealt with a 2.7 engine that self destructed under warranty. What did the dealers/factory do with these engines. I'm thinking a lot of engines self destructed back in the 70's and if your trying to tract down where they may be. Where do you look. Would the engines have been shipped back to Germany and destroyed? Also what would the factory replace a bad engine with? Can't imagine this was handled like the 986/996 cars.

There were spare unnumbered cases for sale. It was handled inconsistently. Sometimes the new case was stamped with the number and it was documented by Porsche. More frequently the blank case just got built up. The original case was usually just sent to the scrap yard. Nobody cared about provenance back then. I've even seen instances where 72-73 era cars got 2.7 cases as replacements when their original case went bad. The thinking was the new version had to be better. S meant nothing in those days.

From what literature I have, it was Porsche policy for larger things like this to be scrapped by the dealer ONCE all the proper claims paperwork was made to PNA. Once a claim was made, then the engine would have been probably scrapped or scavenged for parts by a dealer (or put into a shed in the back). They did not go back to Germany - at least the last ones did not. The first problematic 2.7s with pulled studs probably went back to Germany for a warranty study as was the policy, but after this they were 'scrapped' by the dealer. The official policy actually uses the word 'scrapped.'
