Shipping wheels

I need to know how much does it cost to ship wheel(s). Coast to coast worst case. Do you add a little xtra in costs just for the hassle? I'm guessing I could drop by the tire shops nearby to get the boxes.

I have shipped in pairs on home depot boxes ( I think 3.99)

Shipping fedex cargo and insured for around 150-200 bucks for 4 wheels in 2 boxes

2 6" steel wheels in the same box cost me close to 90 to Calif.

I've had good experience shipping usps. $22 short distance to $55 coast to coast.

Try FedEx ground, two wheels to a box.

FedEX ground do they supply the box or can you get your own? Do people on Pelican who buy wheels accept all the costs; the initial shipping then the handling cost and Paypal fees?

shipping expense can go either way. Ie..$1400 + shipping cost for a set of wheels, or $1600 shipped conus..... Seller just needs to state how shipping is handled in the original post.

And personally, I think it's petty to list something for sale and then note "plus PayPal fees". Isn't PayPal about 3%? Just add 3% to your list price...but asking for buyer to cover PayPal is annoying.....my opinion.

I boxed up and shipped 4 wheels w/ tires across the country this past fall. $560 bucks if I recall correctly. Brought the boxed up wheels to a UPS store.

Do not use the UPS store for any packaging services, unless you are completely helpless. They charge a premium to package and wrap stuff. That would be the most expensive option. We shipped custom race wheels all over the world for years. In the US, we always used FedEx Ground. The wheels were expensive, some almost 1500. each, so I would line the boxes on all four sides, top and bottom with 1 or 2 inch styrofoam, so the wheels would be ok, even if they were dropped or fell of FedEx’s conveyor. Sometimes if the wheels were narrow, we would tape two boxes together, but mostly shipped in separate boxes to keep the wight down if they were dropped. Never had a wheel damaged in shipping. I would usually figure about $50. Per wheel to pack and ship, and I always packed the wheels myself. FedEx always seemed to have the right size boxes. Sometimes we would ship the wheels broken down, into their three pieces to save money shipping overseas. We never shipped wheels with tires, that’s a whole other situation.

Cardboard on both faces, and then the entire thing wrapped in clear packaging wrap.

My experience is that since you are charged per shipment, the fewest number of boxes is the most efficient
Having said that it is very difficult to get 4 wheels in one box
So, two boxes coast to coast $200? In my estimation

Pack them yourself and save the money, time and ultimate hassle.

As others have said, the Home Depot boxes are inexpensive.

You must use the heavy-duty 22x22x22 Extra Large box.

Then while you are there, buy sheet foam in the insulation isle (2 inch white) at around $20 a 96x28 sheet. Then buy bubble wrap. Cut the foam to 22x22 and use it on the top/bottom sides (sides would be probably 22x12 or so).

Make sure the wheel is well packed in bubble. Make sure the wheel does not move inside the box (use more foam/bubble).

ONE wheel per box. Just cut down the 22x22x22 box above.

It will not take that long, you will save the hassle of dealing with UPS stores or FedEX stores who pack - and who ultimately never use critical thinking skills in packing large and/or heavy pieces.

Sal has a good point about foam and bubble wrap on the faces.

I bought a set of 'inexpensive' Ferrari 360 wheels for an old project. The seller had packed them well into boxes, but the faces of the wheels had rubbed against the cardboard in transit, wearing scuffs into the paint.

A real shame that could have been avoided. I didn't want to be a pain and send them back to the seller because of that, so ended up living with it. Someone else might have complained or returned them.

I sell a decent amount of wheels - what I do is take pipe insulation that I get on amazon and wrap the lips of each wheel. I then pack them 2 per box with the faces towards each other in the middle of the box. I'll post some pics of the next set I send out.

Shipping to Europe worth it? Watch out for scams? Not sure how much it would be...

If you want to save some money look into shipping via greyhound. Just had a large roll bar shipped from eat coast to the west coast for ~$100. Takes a few days extra but I've never had issues with things making it in one piece.

This. Air them down so they are light as possible and face them in as pairs. It’s how the tire companies ship tires.

There is a company called BikeFlights which has excellent prices for bicycle parts. Check them out at: BikeFlights,com. We have used them for tandem bikes and sets of wheels with good success. No guarantees. .

Greyhound is a great deal. I have had bumpers, etc sent with no problem. It's a great alternative.
