Award for the Best Bought Porsche 911 of 2018 - Lasted 45 minutes

Looked in the Cars for Sale section and saw a very nice car for a very nice deal.

'74 S Targa stored since '99 for $15K. Lasted 45 minutes.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/993951-1974-911-s-targa-sold.html

This was a very fair deal put out there by an upstanding member of this community.

Someone got a real deal. In many ways it made me very depressed as it's much nicer than my car ever was. I guess I should have saved the money once again and not bought something that needed so much work. Mine was stored since '96 and took a beating in the CA desert. My interior looked nothing like this one - nor the paint. Ok, enough of my whining....

Here are the pics:

Nice to see that someone gave someone a fair shake. I hope it was someone that was looking for one and wanted to get into the hobby.

I question this even being legitimately available when it was posted, it already shows sold the very same day. You can’t really sell and close on a car in one day. The seller obviously already had a buyer for it before posting it here. It’s like in real estate, the MLS listing that shows sold day one, it’s almost always because it was already under contract before listing it. For some reason the seller just felt the need to post this to “market” imo.

Yes, you are probably right. If someone did snag it at that price, they will be doubling their money in no time. We'll see where it ends up.

Yes, how does it end up being sold in 45 minutes?

He actually edited it twice. He put up the ad. Less than 15 Minutes later it said sale pending. Then at 45 he posted it sold. I think it was a real sale.

Back in 1999 when news paper classifieds were a thing, I sold a '76 Targa. The buyer called me at 5:30am and the car was gone by 7:00am. This was on a Sunday and most people probably hadn't even gone outside to get their paper yet.

I've also had a couple of my houses sell before the realtor could finish the online MLS listing.

I'd vote it being a real sale. Just not a sale to a real enthusiast- will be flipped again soon I'm sure.

I know both the seller and the car. The car was real as it was offered to me last week and I was able to inspect it, it wasn't for me but I appreciated the opportunity. I could have bought it and immediately sold it for more, but it had enough needs I didn't feel good about doing that (believe it or not its not just about the money!). The seller is a great, honest guy and a valuable member of the Porsche community. He is far from naive, so he priced the car to sell knowing what it needed. It was a classic case of it looking much better in photos than in person, he was very honest about that.

The car did in fact sell, he also posted it on our local Craigslist and a guy showed up within minutes with cash. 100% guarantee it will be resold at a higher price and 99% chance the new seller will clean it more and write some more flowery prose hiding the known issues. It's a non-runner that truly needs everything. Could the seller gotten a little more? Sure, but he wanted it sold quickly and easily and wanted to disclose the known issues. How it should be handled unlike how we typically see it being done....

What is the car worth? Has allot of needs for sure.

"Straight from the Barn sitting since 1999. Bone stock, early production Targa S. Vin# 9114310612, Engine#6341739.
This is car 612 of 898 Targa S built for 1974. Original Fuch's, Dealer installed AC. Car shows 144K miles. Car has needs..Does not run. There were no keys, so I removed the ignition switch. Drained old gas, and changed the oil. Fuel distributor needs to be rebuilt of replaced. Turns over nicely, but will not fire off. I have a complete CIS injection system that can be included at addition charge. Car is very rust free! There is surface rust, "Not Rotted" on engine lid, and right rear quarter panel where a towel was placed under the car cover and tarp. All suspension mounts and underside are excellent! This is a great project with great potential I just don't have the time to tackle. Similar running and driving cars are selling in the $30-40K range lately. This is fairly priced at $14,940. Clean Washington title."

Thanks for clearing it up. I'm interested to see where it ends up. Seems he left money on the table, but somehow it's easier to do it that way when it needs a bunch of stuff. Like I said mine sat since '96 and it needed just about everything. The engine is good - but the entire fuel system was shot (including tank and all lines) - not to mention all the seals. But again I paid $5K for mine but somedays I feel this was too much even though I do all the work and it's rust free.

I like how he says...”The car is very rust free!” Which is then immediately followed by all of the locations where the car has rust on it. Is that some kind of mind trick? Good one. Lol.

While the seller may have possibly left some money on the table, this was definitely not bought without some real risk though. Assuming the deal went down in a matter of minutes with a cash transaction and a trailer, the buyer truly has no idea how much work the car needs. The seller did, and he is the one that priced it. Let’s not go congratulating this buyer just yet, I’m sure there’s a bunch of money that needs to be spent on this car just to try and squeak out a small profit on it.

Car would have sold easily in either place alone. That's the other puzzling thing.
Only if you play that silly game. First person to put money in my pocket is the buyer. Some guys sends an email asking for extra pictures of the kidney bowl and 5 minutes later another guy says I'll buy it. Do you go out and snap pictures of the kidneys and wait for the guy to make an offer? Hell no. You sell the car. It's not a part.

Guaranteed flip.

Only pro flippers close a blind deal the same day

Regular buyers will be asking for service records, more photos, airline tickets, PPI options, test drives next weekend, etc.

Yep. You hand me a check and you can come pick up the car when it clears in 3-5 days. You want to overnight me a check? Send me tracking and I will take you at your word that you mailed it.

Matt I was kind of hoping you purchased it so you can get a sort of mid-year syndicate going out West that will keep them out of peoples' hands that do not appreciate them...

I’ve got too many balls in the air as it is. I need to get a building built before I do much of anything else.
