81 SC Value

Considering selling my 81 SC, I don't drive it much anymore. Been a while since I sold a Porsche and know the air cooled market changed a lot since I last looked. Opinions on value range and recommended marketplace appreciated!

Owned since 2005, mechanically upgraded and was autocrossed with GGR PCA occasionally. Now sits under a cover (next to another undriven Porsche under a cover).

Mechanically solid, cosmetically old. Mileage is just over 100,000. Had a lot of attention put into it a while back.

Here's a description:
• Current mileage ~105,000
• No rust, one respray in original platinum bronze, clear is peeling
• Espresso brown interior, full leather a bit tired
• Factory limited slip differential
• Factory short shift
• Factory sport seats, recovered in original color
• A/C removed
• Electric sun roof, works!
• Fuchs 6/7, original finish. Have repro 8s as well for the rear.
• Have tool roll and spare, owners manual

Mechanical:
• 3.0L with 915 transmission, both rebuilt in late 90s ~80k miles
• 22/28 torsions
• Turbo tie rods
• Poly suspension bushings
• Strut bar
• Harness bar
• Solid bushing coupler
• Solid bushing pedal cluster
• Heater backdate
• MSD ignition
• Cat bypass, original cat available
• Sport exhaust, original available
• Koni sport shocks
• Many receipts and service history, rebuild for motor and trans documented

Great bones, right restoration candidate or R-Gruppe for the right person. Awesome car, would keep if I had more space/time/money.

Thoughts?

Upper $20 - Lower $30k range.

$35K seems to be the magic number for SCs in this condition. Anymore than this you are getting into better paint, etc. For example, you could spend probably $7K more at $42K and end up with much better paint.

$35 +/-

If the paint is really bad, it’s upper $20s, possibly hit $30k. Still a really cool car and a nice suspension setup. Your mods are similar to my 77 coupe. At auto-x mine spends a lot of time on 3 wheels on tight courses. Does yours do the same?

$30ish

I am also at 30K, but the more you go down from there the faster it will sell. The more you clean it up and are willing to sit on it the more you get over 30K.
This of course is casual observation pricing.

techweenie 05-15-2018 07:08 AM

I'd be at $30+ as is.

But because there are specialists who can deal with peeling clearcoat inexpensively, if I were the seller, I'd consider a small investment in that cosmetic enhancement before offilcially listing for sale. Absent the paint mange, it's a $35K car.

Here's a $32K SC.

Yeah, but that is a complete anomaly. That brown turd rust bucket is no where near a market indicator for a SC. It's a tragic story of someone who was overzealous on BaT - something that someone may indeed say is an affliction on that website nowadays.

That rolling jokeshow of a SC should be deemed a "What Not To Do" when purchasing a used 911. It should be considered a parody or a paradox - however you may look at it.

If not can I get a link? I didn't see it on the recent closed list on BAT.

Disagree.

The marketplace speaks for itself. The arcade and the vested interests alike do not get to pick which sale is an anomaly or outlier (as 930 would put it) and discount them.

Everyone, you and I included, thinks some p-cars are worth more or less than others.

What????? It flummoxed everyone on here. Everyone was completely baffled and flabbergasted by that sale that people talked about it for weeks. You kidding me?

Sorry, but it was an uneducated buy from a person who does not know the market. I see much better cars trading for this without the rotted sills.

People OVERPAY all the time. That's what makes the world go around. And as the seconds tick by as I write this, someone has just signed the papers on their "loaded" Kia SUV for $26K.

I guess it's the "Rotted, Rusted and Patina'd Porsche 911 Craze on BaT" world and you're living in it.

By everyone, you mean the same small group of "regulars".

No, I have stated it before. PPMPD is our very own echo chamber. Do you hear it ?

So a guy buys a 911 from his neighbor for $20K. It's a nice Carrera that has needs. So does that to you make the 3.2 Carrera market a $20K market? I call that guy maybe lucky. Be would would have to see...

So whatever number anyone pays that becomes market? Any arbitrary number that is paid by Purchaser X instantly becomes market value of a particular model and make of car? Outside the one transaction for those individuals I just don't see it.

What's the point of value in really in anything if everything is treated on the same level without regard to condition, mechanical fitness, bodywork and the like?

Your method of "market valuation" is interesting. It has no regard for the physical attributes of an item - just numbers.

Nick_Foster 05-16-2018 10:48 PM

Here we go round the mulberry bush....

The market is an average of similar cars in similar condition with similar attributes. Since this is an impossible task with old cars like these, we approximate. Why waste your breath discussing it? It’s all just a guessing game anyway.
