Friend trading his 911. Should I buy directly from him or from dealer after certified

Doesn’t the car still have a warranty? Does the CPO offer an extension beyond the original warranty? Without knowing all of this...I’d think that you could buy an extended warranty for less than what you’ll pay the dealer to mark up the car and sell it with a CPO. And maybe it would cost you less and offer you longer coverage. It sounds like a crap shoot waiting to buy it from the dealer since you don’t know what kind of mark up they’ll add to it over what your agreement with your friend is.

Buy from your friend and purchase a 3rd party warranty if you feel you need one.
IMO - The CPO is just a marketing tool. |

I’d ask the dealership to put together the best trade-in pass-through deal for you & your friend, then compare that to a non trade-in deal.

A 2013 will be out of original factory warranty just based on time. It was 4 years 50k as a new car warranty. Understand that in order for the dealer to CPO the car its going to cost. The CPO warranty itself costs the dealer about $2700 bucks. He will no doubt have shop charges too. At least $300 or $400 just for his shop to do the CPO check and then add to that whatever they find that needs to be corrected to meet CPO. Trust me they'll find something. That's not a knock on any dealer, that's the nature of the business. They cannot put a car out as CPO without putting in the work. You mentioned tires, we'll they're on the CPO check list too.
The CPO will get you 2 years factory bumper to bumper warranty and unlimited mileage. Sounds like its going to cost more than 5 grand probably at least 6 grand to get the CPO. That's assuming the dealer will cut you that deal. Why wouldn't he want to keep the car and sell it retail as a CPO at a higher price? If you opt to buy it straight from your friend then he should insist on a courtesy trade where the dealer pays him exactly what you are going to pay the dealer for the car. Basically they act as a pass through so your friend gets his sales tax credit. Most if not all dealers will do a courtesy trade, they may charge a doc fee since they're probably going to have to do your title work and plate work.

It also helps manufacturers move off lease cars which lets them keep the residuals on new car leases higher and payments lower on those leases.

A CPO car from Porsche does not guarantee the dealer or PNA will agree to fix/ replace items on the car. Even those items that are listed as covered in the CPO documentation which the average person would expect coverage on has gray areas. Unfortunitely I learned the hard way about the fine print in Porsches CPO agreement brings to a car.
if the spread is 5-6K for a stealership to CPO a car, I belive the 3rd pasrt agreements are 2-3k for two year coverage. OP needs to do his/her due dillagence on the aftermarket companies offerings. If someone from PNA is reading this , happy to discuss my CPO case with you, |

I worked for Porsche for 10 years. I don't any longer but I would be interested in hearing about your incident. I can think of only a couple of CPO issues which weren't easily resolved and covered. In each of those cases there was some serious questions as to whether or not warranty claim was legit or as the result of collision damage.
There are plenty of very good after market warranty firms out there. There are also many bad ones. Do your research. Also, if you plan on keeping the car for longer than 2 years, you can speak to any of the legit after market companies about doing a wrap around warranty if you buy the car as a CPO. They will sell you a longer warranty a lot cheaper if the car is a CPO currently. Its a good way to go if you plan on keeping the car for more then 2 years and you want a warranty.

Depends on the certification.... If its a Porsche Certified Pre Owned then it does mean a lot. Same for any manufacturer if you buy a true Certified Pre Owned from a manufacturer dealership.
Buying "certified" from any old used car lot or Carfax certified or anything like that means nothing. What are they certifying, that this is absolutely a car? A non manufacturer dealership cannot sell a true CPO.

Certified just means they check a list of things. If you get a warranty too that's a different thing.

I thought Certified Used came with a 12 month warranty. That's a decent shake down time.
Although I thought the manufacturers used this for lease returns only.

If you buy a certified pre owned from a manufacturer franchised dealer it comes with a warranty. That warranty is typically two additional years on top of the original warranty, or if the original warranty has expired then the CPO warranty is two years from the date you purchase the car. With Porsche there is no longer a mileage limitation on the CPO, its for unlimited miles. Not only do they have an extensive check list, they have to replace or repair anything on that list in order for the car to be certified. All of the service has to be up to date too, that includes any major service which would come in the next several months. For example, if you're buying a CPO car that's been in service 21 months and the 24 month service is going to be due in 3 months, in order to certify the car the dealer has to do that 24 month service. All normal wear items, tires, brakes, wiper blades, battery etc all have to have more than 50% of their life left too.

All of the manufacturer CPO programs I know, and that includes most major manufacturers all have a 2 year warranty.

Do you work for free? Do you risk your own capital for no return? Do you employ people and give their families benefits for no return? Do you put up with the endless BS from the manufacturer for no return? Do you know what the margin is on a new Porsche? Not much these days.

This is actually a very good question.
I would like to know. You would probably have to research the dealer and what perks they would be giving you before you did the deal. If they offered you a warranty, checkup, oil changes, car washes, what have you (a really pro dealership that takes care of people) then maybe it's worth it. There is a great disparity between Porsche dealerships around the USA. For one, I always thought the LA dealerships were better than San Diego. And San Diego was better than any on the East Coast. You'd probably have to see what they would give you - and most importantly if you were comfortable with them (meaning they weren't a holes). But then, if you're buddy is willing to give you like $10K off (when you find the dealer would mark it up like this). No matter what, a dealer buys low - and sells high. If it's as clean as you say it is, then they are not going to take the hit and send it to auction. It's new enough for them to make some serious $$$ - so they will buy low - and sell high. |

If the dealer is going to do a courtesy trade at a price you and your buddy already worked out what do you expect them to kick in?
These when you bring your car in for service, warranty or customer pay every Porsche dealer should wash your car and offer a loaner or pick up service. Even if you didn't buy your car there.

There is no mystery in the value of anything anymore. People don't give away their trades anymore, its too easy to look up the value on the internet.
