Sorted. Was the temp sender unit connection. Not showing as a fault but did show as a 1 degree implausible number when you use the tester. Interesting that it could have that much effect.

My 993 low mileage Tiptronic has developed a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd once warm. It is almost as if the gearbox is trying to shift at different speed to the wheels so get a hard "clonk". ...
