Clean exterior of gas tank

I want to clean the exterior of my gas tank. I tried to attach a photo, hopefully it works. Can I sandblast this or is there a chemical I could use? Or should I just paint over top? Thanks

No. Sadly when it was modified, the body was widebodied, and the engine was changed too. The car will be a nice base for an outlaw tyoe build. Its like too many modifications like KRLocke mentioned....
