Does anyone know why someone would put these gaskets between the heads and camshaft carrier of a 3.0 1979 engine? Just feels like a lot of effort for no benefit.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions. Turns out it was the pressure plate rubbing the fork shaft (not the arms). The marks were minimal given the pressure plate and fork were new.

Yes the noise began post rebuild, builder did not check for crank play.

The noise happens when the clutch is depressed normally and adjusted correctly....

No transmission work. I think first time I dropped the engine to check for this noise I removed the flywheel. At the time I thought it was the pilot bearing so didn’t check too hard back there.

Wayne’s book probably suggests one rocker approach for the first run, when your measuring valve to piston clearance. It’s easier with all rockers are installed.
