They're definitely used with solid, one-piece seats. I believe they're actually required by the SCCA or PCA or some such organization for any real racing.

Yeah, I had a friend whose 911 had a noisy hood like that, so I checked for that yesterday. It's definitely not the hood, and this is much louder than what I think the hood could produce.
